"When he first heard about furloughs, an army veteran who served in Iraq had a long chat with his wife about the financial consequences of a 20% pay cut.

They are going to pay the important bills preparing to cut cable television and cell phone service.

"The good thing about being a human being is you adapt," he said. "I hope Congress will learn ... the American people are the ones affected."

"A single mom, Falkenberg works as an administrative assistant for the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterrey, Calif. She's expecting an official furlough notice any day.

"It's kind of frightening to me," said Falkenberg who has a 17-year-old son and a 14-year-old daughter. "Twenty percent -- that's quite a chunk. Am I going to have to ask for a 20% reduction in rent?"

He will lose $900.00 monthly.

He blames the rise of the anti-government Tea Party movement within the Republican Party for the federal budget cuts. He says Tea Party enthusiasts have made it impossible for Washington leaders to get a fair deal to cut deficits.

"She's applied for dozens of jobs after finding out of the layoff in mid-February. So far, she's landed only one interview. Her family has already cut back on spending on things that aren't necessary.

"We'll have food for the family," she said. "If we have to do without, we'll cut TV."

Taxpayer-backed solar firm faces layoffs, shakeup just months after opening

By Dan Springer

Published March 20, 2013

FoxNews.com

When Solyndra went bankrupt and cost taxpayers up to $530 million, the Obama administration's green energy loan program was subjected to congressional hearings and became an election-year issue. Now, another solar panel company may be headed for a similar fate.

SoloPower, which makes thin-film solar panels at a new plant in Portland, Ore., opened Sept. 27 with an upbeat ribbon-cutting ceremony. Local and state politicians gushed about the company eventually operating four production lines and creating 450 well-paid green jobs.

Just a few months later, those predictions, and SoloPower's future, are on shaky ground.

The first production line was never completed. In January, the company had a round of layoffs. SoloPower won't say how many of its 60 employees received pink slips.

A management shakeup soon followed -- gone are the chief executive, president and chief technology officer. The company is now trying to raise money by selling some of its equipment through a third party and is attempting to restructure its $197 million federal loan guarantee.

Many are not surprised.

5 of 6 former officials convicted in Bell, California, corruption case

Published March 20, 2013

Jan. 24, 2013: In this file photo, former Bell, Calif., city officials appear for a massive city corruption trial in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom.(AP/POOL Los Angeles Times)

LOS ANGELES Five former elected officials of the small, blue-collar California city of Bell were convicted Wednesday of multiple counts of misappropriating public funds by paying themselves huge salaries while raising taxes on residents.

Former Mayor Oscar Hernandez and co-defendants Teresa Jacobo, George Mirabal, George Cole and Victor Belo were all convicted of multiple counts and acquitted of others.

Former Councilman Luis Artiga was cleared entirely.

The charges against the officials involved paying themselves inflated salaries of up to $100,000 a year in the city of 36,000 people, where one in four residents live below the poverty line.

An audit by the state controller's office previously found the city had illegally raised property taxes, business license fees and other sources of revenue to pay the salaries. The office ordered the money repaid.

The guilty findings were related to the appointment of the defendants to the Solid Waste and Recycling Authority, an agency that prosecutors had argued during trial served no purpose other than to pay them a salary.

OMG - the world is getting crazy...

BRUNSWICK, Ga.(AP) A Georgia woman said Friday a teenager trying to rob her at gunpoint asked "Do you want me to kill your baby?" before he fatally shot her 13-month-old son in the head.

Sherry West wept while she told The Associated Press that she pleaded with the gunman and a younger accomplice who approached her Thursday morning while she walked near their home in coastal Brunswick.

"He asked me for money and I said I didn't have it," she said. "When you have a baby, you spend all your money on babies. They're expensive. And he kept asking and I just said 'I don't have it.' And he said,'Do you want me to kill your baby?' And I said,'No, don't kill my baby!'"

With North Korea's bellicose rhetoric escalating by the day -- on Wednesday a spokesman said its military has been cleared to wage a nuclear attack -- the annual U.S. training exercise Foal Eagle continues just over the border.

Foal Eagle, which began March 1 and will run through April 30 in conjunction with South Korea, includes a nuclear attack submarine, F-22s and B-2 Stealth bombers, and the nuclear-capable B-52s Stratofortress, a veteran aircraft that can drop the largest array of weapons in the U.S. inventory.

The behemoth is the biggest bomber that the Air Force flies. It's so big that it takes 32 airmen more than 12 hours to wash one. The B-52 can do just about anything from nuclear weapon deployment to close air support.

Food workers fired as Mass. students denied lunch
Updated 5:40 pm, Friday, April 5, 2013

ATTLEBORO, Mass.(AP) A food service company spokesman said Friday it has fired four employees after about two dozen students at a Massachusetts middle school were denied lunches this week because their prepaid meal accounts ran low.

"There is a zero tolerance for any individual who leaves a child hungry," said Todd Shapiro, a spokesman for Islandia, N.Y.-based Whitsons Culinary Group.

The lunch decision outraged parents, who said some students at Coelho Middle School in Attleboro cried Tuesday after being told they couldn't eat. Parents and school officials said some students were told to throw their lunches away when they reached the checkout.
