The Difficulty of Getting into UCT Psychology Honours

It seems extremely difficult to get into the UCT psychology honours programme. As a UNISA candidate we need 60% in 3rd year psychology to get into the UNISA honours programme. I applied to UCT with a 3rd year UNISA average of 82% and have been rejected. This is a huge 22% more than the UJ or UNISA requirement and I am really shocked by the outcome. I have heard that UCT is of extremely high standard and produces very competent world-class graduates, but to be rejected with 82% just scares me to think just how high the standards must be. I also wonder if UCT sees the standards of other South African universities as being inferior to its own standards. Anybody been accepted into UCT psychology honours 2013?

Just for the record. There were 281 applications for the 2013 Psychology Honours programme from around South Africa. A mere 35 people got in. That's it. Only about 12.5% of applicants. Typically UNISA, UJ, and UWC candidates do not stand a chance. Reason? Lower standards, no strong research focus and no strong neuroscience + applied cognitive science focus. In the very few cases where people from such universities did get in, they struggled, especially with the statistics and applied reasearch (quantitative, qualitative & psychometric). So Kirsten, I am not surprised that you did not get in with a UNISA 82%.

You should have applied elsewhere. Other universities have lower standards:
WITS, UP & Rhodes (70%+ I think).
UKZN & Stellies (65%+).
And at the bottom of the pile, UWC, UNISA & UJ (60%+).
At UCT you typically will not get in with anything below 75%. Often the requirement is higher.

Oh, and in case you think your 82% at UNISA is higher than a UCT 75%, it is NOT. Due to UNISA being of very low standard, an 82% there is regarded as 70% or less at UCT. So that is why you most likely did not get in. Of the 35 people who did get in, I am confident that at least 30 completed their undergraduate degrees at UCT.

You are indeed atypical! Well done on getting in. So we will be in the same class then... Are you white, indian, coloured or black?

No offence UNISA Beast, but it is really uncommon for UNISA graduates to get in. So you must have stood out among your UNISA pals. That's a great achievement and well-done to you. Have a good year. Cheers.

What one contributes to the world is what truly counts in the end. So let us see who goes on to produce the most insightful and influential ideas?!

UCT Beast....eventually you will find out where I fit in on the colour spectrum but until then, I am curious to know why you asked that question.
And turns out there is another UNISA sudent who got in.

Actually, UCT Beast, you already know who I am! I'm sure you're smart enough to have worked it out by now.

Ha...my guess as to who you are was wrong...but you have more to work with than I do. I could give you a clue but that would make it way too easy, and considering what a brilliant student you appear to be..you don't need easy :-)
I noticed you did not answer my question.

How do you know another UNISA person got in? Lol. Did you think I was one of the people I mentioned above? They are all clowns and similar to UNISA people. And I am sure you are one of them. Or Jaymie even. Oh incase you think I didnt get in and am dissing all of you, I got in. Just chose something else. Goodluck whoever you are. You will get on well with those other UCT people next year. All a bunch of losers

It was not my intention to antagonise you. At first I was offended by your response, and then it dawned on me- you didn't get in, did you? That's why you don't know who I am, and why you think '35' students got in. And why you would think I'm dissing you. of course you could prove me wrong by telling me who you are and on the first day of class I will introduce myself to you.
If not...all the best to you...with all sincerity.
