Brothers and sisters most of you will have heard as a kid of the famous Somali folk tale(The Dragon Killer) involving a princess tied to a tree that is saved by a Somali warrior against a Dragon, do you guys know of more stories involving Somali Dragons like that?

not much, i thought dragons where a western or Chiness thing. the only supernature thing i remember were the people who could turn into waraabo.
queen Arawelo is a very interesting folklore
what about the myth about the old king of the Yibbers. the wizard who used his power to subjugate his people. a people set free only when a muslim saint trapped the evil king in a mountain.
Dhega dheer was alway one of my favorite folk story but trust there were more terrifying one than a canibilistic demon that was pushed into a boiling couldon.
have any of you wonder why dhega dheer resemble Hansel and Gredal. it seems that the same theme is universal.

There are plenty of tales in Somalia and Ethiopia about Horn African Dragons, so its not only Westerners and Asians. The rest of your reply is very interesting, i knew about King Bubair of the Yibbirs and you're right the story about those kids lost in the forest with Dhegdheer does resemble Hansel and Gretel.

yeah. i remember that story but i don't know its name. The creature is not a dragon but according to description i received it looks like a snake and has wings and extremely lengthy and use to make helicopter sounds whilst flying. My grandmother said wiilWaal was the hero in that story and he saved the girl. By the way the girl wasn't a princess she was just a beautiful girl or a damsel in distress if you may.

and in other narration wiilwaal was seeking this beautiful woman's hand in marriage and the family didn't want to refuse him as it would be seen as shameful so they decided to make it impossible so they imposed a condition on him. which was that if he killed the creature he could be married to their her. So Wiilwaal went on his horse and rode to the place where the beastly creature was sighted and he slew the creature with his gigantic sword and spear. So that's how Wiilwaal got married to the fair maiden.

Same here. The fact that I was really young and me & my brothers heard this in the middle of the night... Makes this the scariest story I have ever heard.

How do you think somalis would describe a dragon ? obviously a dragon is big long reptile with wings and somali nomads would describe it as Mas duula (flying snake) so Dragon = flying snake !
