In Serbia, many gay men lead a hidden life, often marrying a woman or end up claiming asylum elsewhere in Europe.

It has already gone wrong several times. Obilic – not his real name – thought that from eye contact with another guy on the bus, that the boy might be gay. He followed him, and tried to talk to him, and ended up getting beaten up.

Perhaps it was a stupid move, but it was “probably the only way to find out”, says the trendy 20 year old young man. The Serbian capital Beograde has no gay bars or clubs. In this eastern European country, nobody dares to reveal their homosexuality.

Serbia strives to become part of the European Union, but many gay men and women claim asylum in various EU member states. Italy, Slovenia, Germany, Sweden, Russia, Canada have granted asylum.

The only active gay organisation in Seria is under the guise of human rights. They hold a “community meeting”, in which none of the members dare to openly declare their sexuality. Each member of the small active group hopes that someone will take that big step.

Obilic has a good job, an active social life and financially stable enough to live an independent life. He never discusses his homosexuality for fear of losing his job.“It’s second nature to protect yourself”, he says.

Talking on a café terrace in Beograde about his love, his voice becomes more gentle as he uses ambiguous phrases. He has a secret relationship which is based upon SMS-ing and sexual liaisons, in faraway hotels. His boyfriend (krajina) does not see himself as gay. Obilic thinks that they will both later marry women and have children.“My boyfriend would never do something that his parents would not approve of.”

Homophobia exists throughout the entire Balkans, but it is especially prevalent in Serbia. Anonymity does not exist here. The country is small (5.5 million inhabitants) and has very close family ties, as well as extensive poverty. Typically several generations live under one roof.

Many gay people fear rejection by their family. The misconceptions and lack of knowledge is commonplace amongst a population who was isolated under communism. As most gay people are not open about their sexuality, it is hard to find other gay and lesbian people.“Isolation is the worst thing”, says Arjos VEndrig from COC Netherlands, an association for gay rights.“People are economically and socially completely independent from their family.”

Society itself is to blame for this. As a result, gay people think very negatively towards their homosexuality, and sometimes attempt suicide. It is important that there can be some places where you can be yourself, without hating yourself. Where it is ok to be gay. But, as these places don’t exist in Serbia, gay life is much harder, in contrast to neighbouring countries like Romania and Macedonia.

Yesterday marked the seventeenth anniversary since the World Health Organisation struck off homosexuality from the list of mental disorders.
But not in Serbia where people have backwards -primitive minds
