BELGRADE -- Police have questioned eight suspects in the Agrobanka case in the presence of the organized crime deputy prosecutor.

The suspects were remanded in custody for 48 hours.

B92 has learnt that all of the suspects will be questioned in the Organized Crime Prosecution and a decision on further actions against them will be made afterward.

Five Agrobanka officials and three officials from Drina Timber and Headcommerce companies were questioned about illegally granted loans.

Former Agrobanka Board of Directors President Dušan Antonić and seven of his associates were arrested on Wednesday on suspicion that they abused office and illegally granted loans. Organized Crime Prosecutor Miljko Radisavljević has stated that the police were checking into all disputable and unpaid loans granted by Agrobanka.

Vučić to insist on probe into case
Deputy PM Aleksandar Vučić says he will at a government meeting request that state officials who helped the ex-Agrobanka chief escape be held accountable.

Vučić underlined that the competent authorities would work on the Agrobanka case for another two months at least, and that it would be uncovered that “many public figures from the domain of economy, politics and other walks of life were involved in this scandal.”

Antonić and seven other people suspected of wrongdoings in the financial institution were arrested on Wednesday evening in a joint operation carried out by the Interior Ministry and Special Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime.

“The Agrobanka business scandal would unravel the way in which the octopus, which is destroying our country, has functioned for years,” Vučić told B92.

“That case is, in fact, the very image of what has happened and what we should not allow in the future,” he pointed out.

He underlined that he would request that the investigation also include those working at the state bodies who assisted Antonić's flight, and that those “who had been involved in that crime” be held responsible.

“Antonić did a grave disservice to himself, and the people who helped him, if he thought that it is possible to hide from investigative authorities,” Vučić said, adding that the authorities knew at each moment his whereabouts.

“When you read all information in the Agrobanka case, then you see why some people felt protected and why some people thought they would remain so for a long time, and why the EUR 300mn fraud could go unpunished,” the deputy prime minister said.

Due to the loss of nearly EUR 300mn, Agrobanka lost its business license and the NBS introduced the enforced administration, and in recent months, the business scandal in that bank has been grabbing the headlines.
