When palagis discovered Manu'a (first contact) on Ta'u, they thought the Samoan mens were civilized coz they wer wearing clothing...what they thought was clothing were actually Tattoo's (Pe'a)....the other story is males get Tattooed when reaching manhood...so we got a story from a person from a well respected tufuga tatau family....Palagis first contact account on Ta'u (unless all men from Ta'u are chiefs/Samoan elite) or rumors that all Samoan men got tatted when reaching manhood...which one is it
Samoa, Tonga, Uvea Mo Futuna were thought to be more civilized then the rest of Polynesia. For they had organized hierarchical systems, tax system, community oriented villages with fales, and they wore tapa and fine mats for clothing, also they were clean w/ their own island made oils/fragrances.
The singing was also noted as a pretty complex, natural, and not savage like as well... and pretty pleasant to the European ears...
Women of Samoa were thought to be very attractive and they noticed Caucasoid features in them (beats me of what and how beauty is defined)... Now this may not mean much, but we got to remember that it was white folks taking note of this. So the long natural hair, curvaceous feminine forms, and cleanliness of the women was quite appealing to anyone that would witness this.
The Samoan and Tongan men were likened to Adonis and very superior physiques to that of the any other race, they've witnessed. i got sources, LOL...
