PEYTON SIVA

* In the first 33 years of the Big East Tournament only one player had won the Most Outstanding Player twice. Georgetown legend Patrick Ewing received the award in both 1984 and 1985.

Louisville guard Peyton Siva joined Ewing after leading the Cardinals to the 2013 Big East title with a 78-61 victory over Syracuse on Saturday. Siva finished the game with 11 points, eight assists and four steals.

In Louisville's two earlier wins in this year's tournament, Siva had 10 points, four assists and three steals against Villanova and 12 points, six assists and seven steals against Notre Dame.

"Peyton Siva now goes in a class with Patrick Ewing,'' Louisville coach Rick Pitino said. "Just a tremendous game for this young man. I told the assistant coaches before (the game), Peyton hadn't played welll against Syracuse. I guarantee he plays well tonight.''

Siva was joined on the all-tournament team by Syracuse's James Southerland and Brandon Triche and Louisville's Russ Smith, Georgetown's Markel Starks and Notre Dame's Pat Connaughton.

Southerland broke the Big East record for most 3-pointers made in a single tournament. Southerland made 19 in Syracuse's four games in this year's tournament, breaking the record of 16 previously held by Syracuse's Gerry McNamara (2006) and Connecticut's Albert Mouring (2000).

* Big ups to the Uso for making History in College Basketball. First Manti Te'o in College Football now Peyton Siva in College Basketball simply amazing! Who would of thought Poly's making history in basketball lol Congrats to Peyton Siva big accomplishment!

We all know that Peyton Siva is a beast on the court but he is also tearing it up in the class room!

* Major congrats to Peyton Siva, who followed up his third team All-Big East selection earlier this week by being named the conference's Scholar Athlete of the Year on Tuesday.

Here's a portion of the release.

University of Louisville men's basketball's Peyton Siva was selected as the 2013 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Scholar Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced on Tuesday.

This season alone, Siva has accumulated multiple honors away from the hardwood. After earning a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District first team, the sociology major landed a spot as the program's second CoSIDA Academic All-American in late February. A second-team pick, Siva boasts a 3.37 cumulative grade-point average and was named Louisville's American Eagle Outfitters Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete, as chosen by the BIG EAST Conference's Academic Affairs Committee.

Just two weeks ago, the Seattle, Wash., native was recognized for his contributions to the community. He was the only BIG EAST player named to the Allstate NABC Good Works Team for his charitable efforts in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement, which include building homes for the elderly, leading basketball clinics, reading to students and working with children with hearing disabilities.

Currently, he is one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, which honors the attributes of NCAA Division I senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition.

* True Athlete and role model malo lava peyton!

UPDATE:

Louisville’s Peyton Siva Wins 2013 Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award:

http://www.slamonline.com/online/college-hs/c...

* The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today the winner of the 2013 Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award. This award is given annually to one senior, six-foot-and under, who thrived in the classroom and on the basketball court.

This year’s winner is Peyton Siva from the University of Louisville. The senior point guard was named the 2013 Big East Tournament MVP, 2013 All Big East third team, 2013 Big East Academic All-American and 2013 Big East Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He holds the Big East tournament and school record for steals in a Big East tournament game with seven, which also made him Louisville’s all-time career leader with 236 steals. Siva finished the 2013 regular season averaging 9.7 points, 5.8 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game. As a junior, he finished fourth in the Big East in assists (5.6 per game), seventh in steals (1.7 per game), and 13th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.61).

“Peyton Sivia is one of the elite players in college basketball,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.“He excelled not only on the court but also in the classroom and it is an honor to recognize Peyton for all of his outstanding efforts this year. He is very deserving of this prestigious award.”

The Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award is named in honor of James Naismith’s daughter-in-law. A panel of representatives from the National Association of Basketball Coaches selects the recipient. To earn the award, the recipient must demonstrate leadership, character, loyalty, all-around basketball ability and excellence in the classroom. In March, Penn State University Lady Lions guard Alex Bentley won the 2013 Frances Pomeroy award. She was formally recognized during the third annual WBCA Awards Show, which will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, April 8, in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center’s New Orleans Theater. This event is part of the WBCA National Convention and is held in conjunction with the NCAA Women’s Final Four in New Orleans.
