This post is horrible. Nothing but a bunch of big ego people on this thing. None of you obviously have too much pride to do any real research without being biased. Fighting for no reason. All polys, micros, melas were great sea navigators and the truth is there are rarely any nowadays. WHO CARES!!!!

You've got to go back and read some of the post, then you will understand with out just criticizing all. Everyone is entitiled to his or her's opinions, but when you cut down someone's opinion or degrade it, then thats where the problem lies, and sometimes you got to fight fire with fire.NOBODY KNOWS EVERYTHING, AND NOBODY IS RIGHT ALL THE TIME!

First let me say we should respect other cultures regardless. 2nd we should not make over-rated remarks which may not be true. First let me correct TOA...when we refer to Samoa in historical books they mean "MANU'A" however this fact was not correctly used by Europeans who referred to the whole group including western Samoa. Upolu and Savaii were settled by Manu'a and other migrants.(Now I need not elaborate on this because you only have to check your oral history to confirm my story).

Second point is that Manu'a historically were of a different culture/race from western Samoa. Manu'a had ties with Tonga so explaining the navigation traditions and culture. Why do you think Samoa uses the word hihifo and hahae? they are Tongan names. Tonga is proven to be the oldest Polynesian settlement in Polynesia thus the cradle of Polynesia. You may find these "facts" as proven scientifically and archeologically. Science brings the evidence.

@buttless the author of the buttless comments "Polynesians" are not .... or whatever you call them. The remarks made by an unintelligent TOA does not reflect Polynesians. And yes they dont win rugby games because they lack required structures to help them win but on raw talent alone they are at best unmatched and you only need to see who dominates sevens (NZ) and individuals from rugby teams to know this. Christian Cullen, Jonah Lomu, Benji Marshall, game breakers amongst many others. YouTube will show u who they are!

@ Wayfinder if you have any science knowledge at all you would know that the vikings WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SAIL TO THE PACIFIC BECAUSE THEY NEVER KNEW HOW TO! their journeys were limited to seeing big landmass and why they never ever reached the Pacific.

To re-illustrate your incompetent knowledge PLEASE do not say Polynesians had to learn seafaring skills from Micronesia...you are referring to Mau Piailug right? teaching the Hawaiians right? well I think you have mistaken yourself to believe this because traditional navigation is alive and well in Polynesian outliers in the Pacific. If you would like to know... even before the hokulea voyage in the 1970s Dr David Lewis had already began work from the 1960s to record Polynesian navigation from these small islands and yes..small islands similar to those in Micronesia which has helped the art of navigation to survive. So I hope that answers your false assumptions & limited knowledge about Polynesia

LOL! Listen here you son of a TOAD, dont go around trying to claim MANUATELE as being Tongan. Hehehehe Manu'a being of a "different race/culture than the rest of Upolu, Savaii etc" HAHAHAHAHA! Manu'a had ties with Tonga....OH REALLY??lol so did the rest of Upolu and Savaii with the continuous practice of Tuitonga's marrying Samoan Women of HIGH RANK.. you numbskull. Is that supposed to be something NEW, that you came across? Manu'a also had ties, relations and influences with Fiti, so did Upolu and Savaii and Tokelau et cetera The people of Manu'a are not Tongans and do not speak Tongan and neither is there any Tongan customs or culture there. However, the influences seen in Tongan Culture, Customs and Language shows heavy borrowing and influence from SAMOA and MANU'A dearie is SAMOAN whether you like it or not.

Melanesians are Melanesians and Micronesians are Micronesians, AND POLYNESIANS ARE POLYNESIANS. Samoa is call, THE CRADLE OF THE PACIFIC, AND THE VIKINGS OF THE PACIFIC! They are many many times more skillful as navigators than the Melanesians and the Micronesians! GO READ MORE HISTORY BOOKS YOU DUMB MONKEY!
Recent historians just claim facts that many pacific islands roam the pacific and are called vikings of the pacific, but the true titles should go to the Yapese people and its empire. The Yapese back in ancient period control the sea of almost the entire micronesia including some in polynesia and Melanesia by just one district empire of mainland Yap. the empire could stretch and last long, but it could not because of threat the Gagil empire in Yap faced from the other two empires in Yap that were fighting for dominance. Yap during ancient period traveled to the Philippines, indonesia, Papua New Guinea in search of valuable commodities that are still popular in Yap. There were also expedition to Palau for giant stone money that were transported to Yap and still find all over the island of Yap.
In recent period, the Hawaiian renaissance with the hope to prove that the Polynesian navigated to the island of Hawaii. such search was to show Thor Heyerdahl theory that pacific islanders drifted through the vast ocean and happen to find an island. The hawaiian searched everywhere and could not find any answer to such feat. and guess where they received their support: an outer islander man from the island of Satawal (the late mau pialug) was there to help the hawaiians and to teach them what the so-called polynesian navigational skills which is popular today.
As of now, I still do not agree that there are such claim of any pacific islands societies that travel throughout the pacific because there were no legitimate facts to prove them, except for the Yapese. I know you can tell me about the Tongan empire, but these places are so closed that is easier for navigational process, unlike the Yapese navigators that sailed hundreds of thousands of miles to Okinawa, Papua New Guinea and Philippines and could easily lose track of their island due to its size, as well as frequent typhoons in the Northwest pacific region.

Well my friend, its been widely proven and widely accepted that the Samoan's originated from South East Asia, and sailed all the way to Samoa and even to Hawaii. All you have to do is read the books in the libraries. You are entitled to your opinions, as enyone else, but to comment without research is absurd, ridiculous, and ludicrous at best.

Maybe in Ancient Times they were the "vikings of the pacific", but now a days they lost that capability. Even the President of Samoa voyaging Society, Tuatagaloa Joe Ananndale has admitted that Samoan voyaging skills have been lost. Voyaging the open Pacific consisted of Way Finding using the stars...maybe Samoans substituted the stars in the night sky for the blinking open signs at the Mcdonal's drive thru or the open signs of All You Can Stuff Your Face Buffets. I am Scandinavian who was born and raised in Papua New Guinea. My ancestors were true Vikings and Way Finders....If it were that in ancient times my ancestors would have sailed to the Pacific and found Samoa...well put it this way we toppled empires and ravaged their lands with the sword...yeah yeah..sticks and stones may break my bones but my sword would have obliterated your tiny rock in the ocean. It's funny how you use our name to describe your ancestral being...well I am a true descendant of Vikings not a Samoan Knock-Off like you. Anyways I am inspired by true Navigators and the Micronesians still retain their ability to navigate the open ocean with just the stars. I know a lot about history, and know that Samoans are so over rated.
Cheers Alelo
This is directed at all of you. Im of Danish stock and I don't mean to be rude but the Church still managed to cream us all and bend us to there rule Alelo. I think you guys are forgetting how history works. many nations have been powerfull through out the years untill they out strip their resources, implode due to internal conflict or politic's, killed by new disease or are destroyed by a stronger or tactically smarter nation. Basically we've all had our time in the sun and we should all respect each others cultures and stop the shit talk. Also a large amount of archaeology is still speculation and there is always new information being unearthed that contridictes previous finds or theorys thus making it a constant learning process. In short learn to be accepting of one another and enjoy history don't use it as a way to bag on other races. Cheers your friendly bush monkey P.s if you want to get shitty at anything try religion and greed as they are the true cause of most of the worlds conflict

Correction, Tui Manu'a Moa is the first Tui Manu'a which originated all Manu'a people. Pili is the grandson of Tui Manu'a Moa born four sons namely Tua, Ana, Saga, and Tolufale. Tua is Tui Atua, Ana is Tui Ana, Saga is Tuamasaga, and Tolufale is the Aiga ile Tai refering to him as well known as the Feanaiga o Samoa. These brothers born all the samoans past and present through their lineage. These brothers are founder of Samoa. They are the only ancient royal title of Samoa. They are the foundation of Samoa. Malietoa is not a samoan title per say. It was a statement by the King of Tonga to Tuna and Fata who defeated them and as they escaped, the King of Tonga yelled out to Tuna and Fata malie tau malo toa born the name Malietoa.
