Stalin had to eliminate the opponents, then those who hesitated, then his rivals.
These "simple peasants" were people who resisted his rule and tried to stop his reforms. A whole class of small land owners refused collectivisation; they had to go and Stalin eradicated them!
Stalin had to put down revolts and rebellions agaist the communist doctrine he believed in. As a true marxist, he didn't believe in negotiations or compromises.
