Many in eastern Europe looked at the Nazis as liberators that would save them from stalin's genocidal programs. Of course they found out they were mistaken in shirt order!

This is true. Our Russia was on the right side in WWII. Or at least at the end of the war.

Hi,

Estonia has a history of fighting for 4 sides in WW2. 1) Their own 2) Finland 3) Germany 4) Russia. All who fought with the meaning to free their country are heroes in my opinion. Why shouldn't they be? They wanted to free the country.

1) Underground government/groups, trying to read how WW2 is going. Finding loop holes to get the country back under their control like pre-ww2. Also later partisans called forest brothers.

2) Some saw Finland as a good way to escape, close by and a good way to fight for their country. Finland was still independent so you knew you were able to stay near their relatives and if the war is over get back.

3) During the German retreat in 1941 I believe Germany made a last call of conscripts for Estonians men. The results were palpable, no one wanted to fight for them as it was well known the last guys got shifted to Ukraine on the promise of fight on your home soil. Germany changed their stance, all conscripts will be fighting in Estonian soil and holding off under Narva. Underground movements and groups got news that the League of Nations was to grant every country their former borders once the war was over. Germans were hoping for 15,000 recruits. They got over 30,000 as Estonians had a hope of fighting off the USSR and maybe get their freedom if the war ends in time.

4) Not a lot wanted to join the Russians, most were conscripted. The reason being obvious, it was the fight against the Russians that got the country their independence pre-ww2 and quite obvious why it was so. Estonians weren't trusted either. Most were sent to work camps or on far fronts. Under Narva Estonians weren't allowed as running over to the other side was a fear. Just as a small side note Estonians also fought Baltic-Germans for their independence who didn't like the idea of a free Estonia so Germans weren't that neutral to us either pre-ww2.

So there, as an Estonian I don't care first of all. It's history. We have retrospect, in 1939-1945 no one knew how anything was going to pan out. It was a Game of Thrones situation. Everyone wanted something. Remember for us the aggressor was the Soviet Union. Finland, Estonia, Latvia and I believe Lithuania also got a copy-paste letter that asked basically to surrender their territory, well it wasn't that obvious but that's what you were going to give away eventually, it was an aggressive powerplay. Finland refused and it got them into the Winter war. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania took note and agreed thus ending their rule. Many believe in retrospect this is one place were a mistake was made. The world didn't see any fighting (I think some border clashes did take place but don't quote me on that) and forgot, no mobilization order was made as the Baltics decided to play neutral. So for all the blood shed and getting a country this time it was decided that diplomacy was in order, well we know now how that went.

So 1) USSR invasion 2) Trying to reform the country 3) Going against the overall goodwill that would of meant Estonians death , are the reasons why Russia has the perception that we are nazi.

You know what the scary part is? Point 3) is true. We are basically 90% sure Estonians as a people will die out. We are below the line of being able to get the population out of a decline. The 3) reason why so many joined the last ditch effort was to form a country and we failed. Russia occupied us over 30 years, assimilated and brought in their own people while deporting our own to their own areas. So for us the holocaust was a lot less straight but no matter that, Russians wiped us out from the map. So gg no re Russia. I'm not mad as I believe we might as well unite under one rule, divide and conquer. It has to be a bloody good rule system though to make everyone happy but in our current from too much friction gets created.
