Ukraine needs the energy supplies and has a long historic relationship with Moskva. Obviously that is more important to them than catering to the needs of an expansionist EU.

KIev is trying very hard to reduce its gas dependency in Moscow by importing less from GAZPROM, importing from other sources (LNG from Israel now?) or seeking alternative energy sources.

But unfortunately, it is bound by a 2008 contract signed by Yulia Timoshennko to buy a minimum quantity, or pay a penalty. That's where Ukraine stalls; it doesn't want to respect the terms of the contract and tries to renegociate it.

Its gas pipeline is still a bargaining chip for Kiev, until South Stream comes on song, and then... bye, bye blackmail. Putin and Medvedev (Prime Minister) stay quiet. GAZPROM has a fight on its hands now.

Nonsense, a free trade agreement with the EU is more important than apeasing Putin, everybody knows that the Moskali are overcharging Ukraine for it's gas and even Yanukovich isn't prepared to be bullied over it,Yulia made a big mistake when she signed the agreement and Yanuk was able to use that as an excuse to jail her.
