Russian bishop: Many Ukrainian dissenters willing to rejoin Moscow-run church

Today at 20:28 | Interfax-Ukraine

Many of the members of the breakaway Ukrainian branch of the Moscow-based Russian Orthodox Church are willing to seek reunification between the so-called Kyiv Patriarchate and the Russian church, a Russian bishop said on Wednesday.

"I know that among those who are close to the so-called Kyiv Patriarchate, among the clergy of that organization, there are quite a lot of those who would be ready to reunite with the canonical church," Ilarion, archbishop of Volokolamsk and head of the External Ecclesiastical Relations Department of the Moscow Patriarchate, told reporters in Moscow.

Ilarion said the Kyiv Patriarchate is seeking bridges with the Moscow-run Ukrainian Orthodox Church and that the two sides are holdings meetings in preparing dialogue.

The positions of the Moscow-run Ukrainian church "are very strong today and not only are they not getting any weaker but they are getting stronger and will undoubtedly keep getting stronger," the archbishop said.

A visit by the head of the Russian church Patriarch Kirill to Ukraine in the summer this year offered evidence that the majority of Orthodox Ukrainians were loyal to the Moscow church, Ilarion argued. In all of Ukrainian regions he visited, Kirill was met "not as a guest or a foreigner but as the spiritual leader," Ilarion said.

"I hope that steps will be taken under the wise leadership of Patriarch Kirill and Metropolitan Vladimir [head of the Moscow-run Ukrainian church] that will help eliminate this split which is politically motivated," the archbishop said.

"It’s interesting that a day prior to the arrival of Patriarch Kirill to the Kiev-Pecherskaya Lavra the parishioners and clergy witnessed an unusual phenomenon – a great many pigeons flocked to the Monastery from all over the city, seating themselves along the eves. One Kiev seminarist remarked:“I have never seen such a great number of pigeons at the Monastery."

LOL! Big "thank you!" to all Ukrainian pigeons for support and loyalty to Ukraine and contempt to Russian pop! I hope Kirill liked the decorations and medals prepared by Ukrainian pigeons for him. LMAO!

ROCOR went back to the Moscow church and now Ukraine will to. It’s all about making the Orthodox Church regain its strength once again but then the non-Orthodox people in the Ukraine aren’t going to be very happy with this but who cares they know nothing about Orthodoxy.

The Orthodox Church is a pillar of Russian society, and could become such in Ukraine, with allegience to Patriarch Kyril .

There you are wrong. Many Ukrainians and Belarusian expats help their homeland financially and politically.

See the thing is not many Ukrainian Orthodox want to kiss the Mongol bred arses of the Muscovite PIGS. The heart of the Rus and it's church has it's roots in Kyiv, not the Mongol bred heartland of the Russian Horde.

Just ask any Belarusian and/or Ukrainian expat their take on it.

These are mostly families of war criminals and NAZI collaborators who fled retribution after WWII and were given shelter in North America, and now pretend to have a vested interest in these countries. These people were mass murderers and the present generation of Ukrainian and Belarusian ex-pats are mostly pro-fascists supporting US neo-conservative policy.

They do not represent the Ukraine or Belarus, and their interference is not welcome.

WRONG WRONG WRONG! New emigration has nothing to do with WW2 just as first immigration has nothing to do with WW2 , they came to Canada in the beginning of 1900s. Second immigration are prisoners of Nazi camps and forced labor. You are nuts!
We do speak for Ukraine. We are extension of Ukraine! Thanks to our support and hard work we finally have independent Ukraine.
Stop being an idiot!

You can create all the B.S. you want but all the Orthodox churches will combine once again. I don’t know why you and other non-Orthodox people are so against this when it isn’t any of your business. You and your wife have nothing to do with our religion and regardless of what you or other non-Orthodox do or make up you have no power what so ever to stop the unification.

Once again you are completely right. Steadily but fast the Orthodox Church is combining back to what it was and with this comes one way of thinking and nationality and that’s the difference between the Orthodox and Catholics, our religion is based upon unified nationality and culture as a religion. Most Orthodox will consider each other as brothers, sisters and cousins. We took Orthodoxy from the Greeks and they consider themselves as our cousins most of them will state we are the same and it goes on and on. Unification of the Orthodox Church in the former SU will stop all the hatred and division created by the non-Orthodox people. In a couple of weeks Cossacks in California are having a meeting in San Francisco and we’re having Cossacks from the Ukraine or their decedents currently in the US and other countries who want to combine with us at the meeting, also for the first time the Russian Consul General is coming to the meeting. It looks like little by little the Orthodox will combine and Cossacks will be united under one Orthodoxy.

The ROC is a f*cking joke. It's run by ex KGB agents who thrive in kissing Kremlin arse. If the Othodox want to unite, then they can do it in Kyiv under the Ukrainian Church, not the KGB infested ROC.

Many Westerners know little about the new Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Father Kirill. Many Russians know him as a great orator and a host of a weekly TV show “Pastor’s Word.” However, very few know that Kirill (Vladimir Gundyaev by passport), a billionaire and a former KGB operative, made his fortune in tobacco, alcohol, and oil sales. His activities were among the main reasons why not-for-profits in Russia lost tax-deductible status. The new Orthodox leader is fond of playing with stocks, car racing, downhill skiing, and breeding exclusive kinds of dogs. He owns villas in Switzerland and a penthouse with a view of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow.

In 1996, Kirill became a board member of bank “Peresvet” that is responsible for servicing the financial interests of the Russian Orthodox Church. The 1996 September issue (#34) of the Moscow News reports that Kirill, now for two years, had been organizing imports of highly taxable products, mostly tobacco, under the tax-exempt non-profit banner of the Orthodox Church. The claims were supported by other respectable news sources, including the Moskovsky Komsomolets.
