Almost half of Puerto Rican adults drink - Caribbean Business - 17/07/08

Nearly half of Puerto Ricans consume alcoholic beverages, according to this week’s CARIBBEAN BUSINESS/WOSO Radio/Gaither International poll. A whopping 46% of the island’s population admits they do, a percentage lower than that of their U.S. mainland counterparts.

Puerto Ricans under the age of 55 are significantly more likely to be drinkers than those aged 55 and older. While 54% of Puerto Ricans between the ages of 18 and 34 drink and half of those between 35 and 54 also do, only 30% of those 55 or older admitted to being drinkers, according to the poll. Similar to stateside results, where younger adults are more likely to drink than older respondents, in Puerto Rico there’s a 24% difference between younger and older adult drinkers.

The Gaither survey also indicated that men are significantly more likely than women to drink alcohol; 56% of men admit they do, compared with only 36% of women.

“Interestingly, those in the workforce are also significantly more likely than those currently unemployed to drink alcohol. Gaither found that while 57% of those currently employed drink, only 36% of those unemployed do,” noted Beatriz Castro, research analyst for Gaither, adding several factors such as a culture of “drinking as socializing” as well as stress could be considered environmental factors that promote this type of behavior.

Although not as significant a gap found by age, gender, and work status, poll results did reveal some differences among respondents from different education and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Mark Lauer -- frequently known as CoquiLogan -- should not be allowed on
Topix. I do not understand why you hestitate to take away his privilage to
post on Topix. I have friends who tell me that I should get off of Topix
because it does not protect its members from obnoxious, insulting trolls
such as CoquiLogan. It is not worth it.

I find great stories to post on Topix. Immediately, Mark Lauer with one of
his many pseudo names will post the first or second comment which is
completely off topic, vulgar, stupid, etc. He ruins the thread before it
even has a chance to become a productive discussion with merit.

Many posters, especially Puerto Ricans, no longer participate on Topix
because of this destructive troll's destructive,mean, nutty, off topic,
stupid behavior.

Not only should he be removed from Topix. All his vulgar, obnoxious
postings should be deleted. If this is not done immediately, I shall join
all those who left Topix because of this troll.
