Clinton vows to beef up island police force - The San Juan Star - 5/19/08

Local campaign officials for Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday that if elected she would increase the number of police officers on the streets of Puerto Rico in an effort to improve security , according to documents circulated Sunday by local campaign officials.

"I think the people of Puerto Rico deserve a president who fights for you, a president who is ready from Day 1 to assume the role of commander in chief and keep our families safe," she said in a statement released by the campaign.

The New York senator faces a presidential primary against Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois on June 1.

According to Kenneth McClintock and Roberto Prats, co-presidents of her campaign in Puerto Rico, Clinton would also restore funding to the island from the Community Oriented Policing Services Program, of COPS.

She would work with the police Department to ensure that COPS funds are invested efficiently in more personnel, tools and tactics to reduce crime, they said.

In the past, $155 million was assigned through COPS, allowing the contracting of 3,675 additional officers.

Clinton would also assign funds under programs that President Bush has attempted to eliminate, including money to improve the island's criminal justice system, the campaign said.

She would give full support to financing for the Puerto Rico-Virgin Islands High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area and has pledged to reduce the homicide rate in certain local communities by 50 percent and support financing for programs to eliminate drug selling points, the campaign said.

Sounds as though Senator Clinton plans to spend an awful lot of time in Puerto Rico rather than in Washington, if elected.

In fact, it sounds as thought she will be setting up an office right next door to the island's Governor there in PR.

I think, according to Bill Clinton that these campaign "promises" would qualify as a "fairy tale"....what do you think?

One aspect of her promises that is encouraging and makes me feel comfortable with her is that
she was very specific in pointing out see would keep her promises. She did not make promises without suggesting how she would come up with solutions to solve the crime problems.

FYI, the decision by the local (PR) democrates to change the PR caucus to a popular vote primary was done "primarily" to support Senator Clinton's claim of having received more popular votes than Senator Obama, with the intention to sway super delegates to support her rather than him.(Its my understanding that Senator Clinton believe that PR voters will be more supportive of her rather than Senator Obama)

Of course, we all know that the name of the game is to obtain more committed delegates and/or super delegates than your opponent, and not necessarily popular votes.

Hillary Clinton today cited the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy during the 1968 presidential campaign to explain why she was remaining in the race despite long odds.
