Animal cruelty reported in Barceloneta - prwow.com - October 12, 2007

SAN JUAN (AP) – Dozens of dogs and cats were sacrificed by Animal Control Solution personnel after an animal pick-up was carried out in Barceloneta, citizens and animal defenders reported Friday.

Citizens and Animal Defenders Spokeswoman Alma Febus said all of this started when Plazuela, Dávila Freites and Quintas Héctor Ruiz residents received a letter from Administrator Leonidas González, warning them dogs and any other pets inside of the apartments would be picked up on the specified date.

“They came as if it were a drug raid,” Febus said.“They came with municipal police and civil defense. They took the dogs, cats and any other animal they would find. Some mascots were taken in front of children,” she said.

José Manuel Rivera, the owner of the house closest to the area were the animals were thrown, confirmed they threw them under a bridge in the La Roseta sector of the Almirante Norte neighborhood in Vega Baja.

“They threw those animals from the Paso del Indio Bridge. Many of them were already dead when they threw them, but others were still alive. In fact, some of those animals were able to climb up to the street, as beaten up as they were, but 50 dead animals were left there,” Rivera said.

The national and worldwide press is running this AP story on cruelty to the stray dogs on the once "Enchanted Island.' Puerto Rico prides itself on being a deeply religious, Christian society. The religious zealots and bigots preach family values to gay people. I bet not one gay person was involved in this cruelty towards God's Creation. Would they like to throw gays or anyone else who is different off the same bridge if they could get away with it? The BBC and the citizens of the United Kingdom are outraged by this cruelty. How many in Puerto Rico are outraged? Or are they saying it is not my "problema" ?

On the other hand cruelty to animals is similar to child abuse, the difference is that animals do not talk and never get justice in court.

The hostility callousness, shown in Puerto Rico toward animals and people against people denotes lost of sensibility, respect, pity toward others.

Please, Jesus freaks, do not take this as a call to your dogma, a mentally health person has values learned in school, society, family without the urge of hollering: Satan!

The people responsible for this should be hurled off the same bridge - of course, that will not happen.

I hope their eternal punishment will be to relive the last moments of these animals deaths over and over, plus the anguish of the children as their pets were ripped away from them for all eternity.

I think since public housing is supported by tax payer money that the tax payers of the region should demand that pets be allowed in the housing projects.

As a puertorican, and an animal lover, i feel very upset at thinking that someone, some agency would do that to a been, that all cares about is loving and protecting his human counterpart. I just hope that these people all get what is comming to them, and that the hand of the all mighty keeps a hold on them for eternity, people like these is what gives a bad name to humanity. In their dreams they will have their punishment, their souls will be lost forever.

Self anointed pink dragoness, you pay no electricity, water, have cable, air conditioning, food stamps, tarjeta medica,a nice walk up and you want your pets to be paid by the fools that give you all that for free? For that twisted logic you deserve to be thrown from the bridge only if you can swimm.

My family and I just traveled to PR last month, we were amazed at the amount of stray dogs that are roaming the island. Something has to be done!! People should be held acountable for their actions. Hopefully after this mess officials will start inforcing new rules. It is embarressing as a puerto rican to have to hear that something like this happened. It makes us sound like we are savages.

There is an easy SOLUTION to this if some of the MORONS in government would get it together in Puerto Rico and where I live in Corpus Christi, Texas for that matter.

They need to have "catch and release" spay and neuter programs for dogs and cats. It has been proven that, over time, the problem will be solved and it is cheaper in the long run than catch and kill policies that many cities in the United States use.

As for the IDIOTS who did this to these poor animals, they need to have SEVERE FELONY laws in place for anyone who hurts or neglects animals PERIOD!

Having pets is good for people and children, even if they are on public assistance. Why should a child be deprived of having a dog or cat just because of their families circumstances?

I would rather see welfare money used on a pet then some of the things I've seen it being spent on at the store.

I would love to see these people get attacked by the dogs they are about to kill. Let the animal turn on them and see how they like it. If these people are gonna kill these animals, I would love to see the animal get its revenge and turn on the murderers. The animals are like all living creatures, they are hungry and scared. Let the people walk way with scars knowing that what they did to these beautiful animials will stay with them forever. As a Puerto Rican whos family if from San Juan/Ponce, I am appauled by this behavior.

THE CANINE BRIDGE OF SORROWS...

What do you expect? Puerto Rico sees nothing wrong with cockfighting or dog fighting. Did you know some of the roosters and dogs killed in a contest are thrown frequently on the trash heap as garbage by super macho Puerto Rican men.

The Governor of Puerto Rico, Anibal Acevedo Vela, signed into law the fact that cockfighting is a "Culture of Puerto Rico." Maybe, AAV Stupidio should sign a law recognizing brutalizing dogs by throwing them off a bridge for a downward impact from a hundred-foot fall as another "Culture of Puerto Rico."

I once witnessed three elegantly dressed male kids in a brand new Mercedes pick up a stray dog and they broke all four legs of the dog. They laugh and thought it was funny that the dog cried out in horrible pain.

What is missing in a culture that celebrates cruelty to animals? Jesus must weep as He looks down on the people of Puerto Rico for allowing this cruelty towards his creations. How does it go... Do unto the least of us and you do unto me.

Are some of us more like the Roman centurions who made certain Jesus suffered pain on the Path of Sorrows.

Could that bridge in Barceloneta be "The Canine Bridge of Sorrows"? Who would you rather pray for the dogs or the creeps that killed them?

You watched three kids do this to a dog, and what did you do???? I would have beat the holy hell out of them. In fact, I would have stopped them BEFORE they broke the second leg. And you were doing........what? Watching?

People with "second class citizenship" equals socio-political inferiority. You can't expect them to have animal rights at the top of their bill, when they're sense of self-respect is at an all time low. That island needs a revolution as bad as a dog in heat needs relief.

I am seventy-nine years old. This happened about nine years ago. I was alone with two elderly ladies on a jungle road. First thing is that I and my lady friends were shocked and couldn't move. We also was in great fear for ourselves because these kinds of cruel monsters usually have guns. Our own lives were in danger.

Plus it happen quickly and in less than four or five minutes. We ourselves were in great danger and had to lie low. Thank God they were headed in the opposite direction of our car on a narrow road.

As we came out of shock and witnessed and heard the cries of pain from the little dog, I stepped on the gas and sped away as the monsters also sped away in the opposite direction with their radio blaring and their horn blowing.

I have witnessed before this incident that some ignorant, macho Puerto Rican males when they have an accident do not only reach in the glove compartment for the car registration only, but to get a gun... We thanked God that we did not become victims along with the defenseless little dog...

It's no wonder the Puerto Rican police are the way they are.
