I think they should just separate themselves from the US. If the hate so much the situation. But that will mean losing all the perks. The Island will probably go to bankruptcy in a short time.

AlL I know about is history. In the past there have been many places that had territorial and commonwealth status. Lets compare two, Hawaii and the Philipines. Hawaii is now a state, it has lost its culture, its language, and its ways of life. It is rich now, considered to be one of the formost destinations in the world and most people who leave there are proud citizens of that state.
The Philipines is an independant republic. It has numerous uprisings, One of the lowest economies in the world, and one of the most historically corupt goverments in history. But the philopines has its culture (continuualy under assault byt Extremists, Its language (constantly being suplanted by chinese) and it still has it way of life.
Now what would have happend if the philipines had become apart of the US instead of going its own way?
I love the hispanic culture in the americas and I would hate for it to change in any drastic way, but what I hate more is to see a proud people and their visions of "independance" get corrupted and make things worse for the people.

Statehood for the rich. yahoo, federal taxes remember leona helmsley said only little people pays taxes.

you needs 66 percent of the votes to have it approved. do you have them? 52% will take you no where.

Dreams of independence? For whom, less than 3% of the islands population? Hawaii has not lost all of its culture. Besides, the original native Hawaiians were outnumbered by the great number of outsiders immigrating to Hawaii BEFORE Hawaii became a state. The natives, who were small in number were largely displaced, but many aspects of their culture have survived. There has been a revival of their language for example. They have kept many other aspects of their culture which many visitors are keenly interested in and have become known worldwide as identifying Hawaii.

This is true...Puerto Rico had voting representatives in the Spanish parliament, inmediately as these were implemented into the Spanish parliamentary monarchy (even a Puerto Rican born President of the Spanish Cortes, in the early 19th century was voted), congressional representation the U.S. denies the people of Puerto Rico from having since it invaded our islands, for the past 112 years.

Culture shouldn't be a freak/sideshow event, though. Should it? Please don't next cite Lilo & Stitch as another shining example of US goodwill towards Hawaiian culture.
