There are many different theories on sociopathy (Antisocial Personality Disorder) The most common theory and foundings have been that most sociopaths turnout to be criminals eventually. Some studies and evaluations have shown that sociopaths lack any emotion specifically empathy and remorse towards others. Sociopathic individuals can be very charming and extremely manipulative, they are excellent observers; therefore they are expects at mimicking human emotion. Statistics are and can be extremely tricky due to the fact that it's impossible for all sociopaths to be evaluated. Sociopathic individuals can fool many psychologist; therefore they can easily be misdiagnosed. Some statistics claim that there's about 4% of sociopaths in the general population. It is estimated that 3% of all males in our society are sociopaths, psychopaths are rare perhaps 1% of the population. These numbers are much likely higher. In fact studies have found that most likely everyone has met a sociopath and not even know it.

There are other theories which speculate that sociopathic individuals do have emotions just like any other human being, but they do not attend to the emotions as others do so. They do not experience them as other people do. It is also very important to note that not all sociopaths/psychopaths will engage in murders, robbery, rape and other criminal activity; however they can hurt other's in different ways such as, emotional abuse, acting out behaviors to gain attention from families and friends.

As human nature we all are in need to feel something whether is considered good or bad, we seek to feel some sort of satisfaction. In my own perspective and study of sociopathy, I refuse to believe that any human being lacks emotions, for that simple fact. When sociopaths/ psychopaths commit murders and many times heinous crimes is for fulfillment, pleasure and self satisfaction. Internal vacancy it's most likely avoided by human kid altogether.

Inability to fully attend to the fear or actions can be speculated as being a reason for sociopaths/psychopaths not having a conscience. There's also speculations that a psychopath is born that way, through dysfunctional areas of the brain that are suppose to govern emotion (e.g. amygdala) where as a sociopath is made through neglect, abuse, bullying, and other factors. Psychopaths are known to be more calculated they can plan an attack and fantasize for years before the act upon it, while a sociopaths can also be calculated but are usually more impulsive.

Yes it's really interesting and extremely complex that's why there's so many theories.

Many sociopaths/psychopaths can have very successful careers they can be very keen and have a higher IQ than the average individuals, because they can be less out of touch with emotions for other people they may not experience the stress that often comes from family strains, making them more focused at achieving power.

Some signs of a sociopath:

They are very (charming)that trait gives them the advantage to appeal to most people, especially for the vulnerable and people who seek guidance. Just like wild animals they can sense a prey and are excellent in analyzing body language.

Sociopaths like the ability to feel shame, guilt or remorse. Because sociopaths experience and attend to emotion differently, they are usually selfish, not necessary by choice but because their only interest and concern is themselves.

Sociopaths enjoy (boasting) about their lives and are great story tellers. They often lie about their achievements and accomplishments; however many are involved in high levels of the goverment and nation.

Continued signs:

Sociopaths are not capable of love, they know how to mimic the emotions that are displayed through love, but are deceitful. If a sociopath is in a relationship and he/she get's dumped sociopaths may exhibit signs of concern, anxiety and melancholy ,but it's all a show and it's absolutely not for their partners but because they were left.

Sociopaths have huge egos, if you ever try to debate with them you will never win, because by any measures they will not admit that they're mistaken or wrong.

Sociopaths never apologize, because in their minds they are never wrong or at fault. They can simulate guilt but it's very rare when it comes to apologies.

Sociopaths love to be praised, being praised feeds their bottomless pits. The more compliments they get the more their ego grows. If you ever try to have a conversation with them you will notice that they wil put up a wall and continue to ramble about themselves.

Just like any human being these traits vary per individual, some of these traits are stronger than others. Also is important to note that there are different levels of sociopathy.

Antisocial Personality Disorder is also known as psychopathy or sociopathy. Individuals with this disorder have little regard for the feeling and welfare of others. As a clinical diagnosis it is usually limited to those over age 18. It can be diagnosed in younger people if the they commit isolated antisocial acts and do not show signs of another mental disorder.
Antisocial Personality Disorder is chronic, beginning in adolescence and continuing throughout adulthood. There are ten general symptoms:not learning from experience
no sense of responsibility
inability to form meaningful relationships
inability to control impulses
lack of moral sense
chronically antisocial behavior
no change in behavior after punishment
emotional immaturity
lack of guilt
self-centeredness

People with this disorder may exhibit criminal behavior. They perhaps do not work. If they do work, they are frequently absent or may quit suddenly. They do not consider other people's wishes, welfare or rights. They can be manipulative and may lie to gain personal pleasure or profit. They may default on loans, fail to provide child support, or fail to care for their dependents adequately. High risk sexual behavior and substance abuse are common. Impulsiveness, failure to plan ahead, aggressiveness, irritability, irresponsibility, and a reckless disregard for their own safety and the safety of others are traits of the antisocial personality.
Socioeconomic status, gender, and genetic factors play a role. Males are more likely to be antisocial than females. Those from lower socioeconomic groups are more susceptible. A family history of the disorder puts one at higher risk.
There are many theories about the cause of Antisocial Personality Disorder including experiencing neglectful parenting as a child, low levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, and belief that antisocial behavior is justified because of difficult circumstances. Psychotherapy, group therapy, and family therapy are common treatments. The effects of medical treatment are inconclusive. Unfortunately, most people with Antisocial Personality Disorder reject treatment. Therefore, recovery rates are low.

Thanks for that wondeful addition. Very true, upbringing can play a part but often times is not the main reason a lot of studies are suggesting that especially regarding psychopaths. Sociopaths are more incline into falling into the poor upbringing category. What I find fascinating is the theory and the different oppositions of sociopaths/psychopaths not having any emotion which I don't believe.
