Erika Steinbach is a hated figure in Poland. She has dedicated her career to documenting the suffering of Germans expelled from Eastern Europe following World War II.

Considering that these German expellees originally had no problem with what Hitler was doing, I think its an act of compassion that they were not all killed for supporting Hitler. Being expelled was just a slap on the wrist for them.

As this German lady said, many expellees were from Hungary, Czeck Republic and Yugoslavia. It would be interested to see what people from those areas think about this.

By that time there were only a few Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian national formations in Red Army, and chances are high that none of these units have marched through East Prussia, Poland, and Germany. As far as I know, they were only involved in operations in Russia, Belarus, and Baltics, but not in Germany, so they just couldn't commit rapes there.

You are full of crap Robby. Firstly one has to take with a large dollop of salt the claims of Steinbach in the interview. In this context notice that even the interviewer of Steinbach does not accept her arguments. Steinbach, contrary to her claims, represents the extreme hardcore conservatism of the German expellee groups. She has been shunned publicly by Merkel on many occasions although predictably, in the article, she emphatically denies this. Merkel has distanced herself from the claims and statements of Steinbach because they are the cause of continual, understandable friction between Poland and Germany. This is something that Merkel clearly does not want.
In the article Steinbach refers cynically to Polish "nationalists" who are out to provoke her at every opportunity. At the same time though one cannot avoid recognising that she herself is an extreme German nationalist.
Steinbach also claims that Poland is the only country which is blocking her seat as chairwoman of the new centre. That is incorrect as the Czechs have also repeatedly objected to her plans and position.
It is truly amazing that this woman, who is the daughter of a German soldier who participated in the occupation of Poland in WWII, considers that it is appropriate that a centre be established in Germany to commemorate the German "victims" of WWII who were expelled from previously German territory. It surely must be pointed out to her that they were expelled partly because they bore some responsibility for Germany starting WWII. This must be one of the most blatant examples of German insensitivity there is. And the woman has the audacity to claim that the source of the friction lies with the Poles. I wonder what your Russian brothers' view on the situation is? Perhaps the present inhabitants of "Koningsberg" would welcome her also with open arms and show equal "understanding" for her point of view - especially when she announces that she intends to lodge claims for the restitution of German property in the region.
