The Spanish Inquisition was an ecclesiastical tribunal started in 1478 by Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. It was intended to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms. The new body was under the direct control of the Spanish monarchy. With the advent of Spanish colonialism the Philippines became a closed colony and cultural contacts with other Southeast Asian countries were closed. In 1481, the Spanish Inquisition commenced with the permission of Pope Sixtus IV and all non-Catholics within the Spanish empire were to be expelled or to be tortured until they renounced their previous faith. Until 1898, the Spanish Inquisition was active against Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims (then dominated religions). Forced conversions were not uncommon and any attempt not to submit to the authority of the Roman Catholic Church was seen as both rebellion against the Pope and the Spanish King, which was punishable by death. Buddhist practices, festivals and iconography had to be converted and adopted to Catholicism if they were to survive Spanish persecution.
We have to say Spaniards destroyed the Soul of Philippines. The slave mentality leads to the disintegrated minds. Still many of filipinos likes to use 'I am an Ilocano or I am Tagalog' instead of I am Filipino (Oh! the word Filipino itself connotes colonization and slavery!) |

The name PHilippines is an integral part & identity of Filipinos uniting thousands of islands & dialects as i united Filipinos. To take out the name Philippines is to take out our legacy of being Filipino. Spanish did not destroyed the soul of Philippines but rather had created it. we will not be who we are if not the Spanish inquisition.
We dont say that we wanted what happened but through inquisition & invasion of different cultures, you can look the bad & good side of it. But we emerged & hold our land & identity and able to keep it that way as long as there are still a living true Filipinos in the world. |

Filipinos is a mix of different cultures with strong influence of Spanish & American. Thats why many of us are so liberal & yet conservative at the same time. Its a clash of beliefs & irony, i might say! We are actually the heart of South east asia!

You are talking about the last 500 years. What about the contributions of those ancestors before this 500 years? Why many filipinos forget the pre-hispanic history? Filipinos did not come from Spain. Ruy Lopez de Villalobos given then name Philippines to Leyte and Samar only not to the entire islands. |

And dont forget about Mindanao people. They are also in the same country. But Spaniards could not conquer them for 500 years. They are the heros. Still they are in the same country. Its not the word Philippines made them to be with others. Its the blood and mentality of brotherhood. Forget about the recent bomb blasts. That became a global phenomena.

I DID NOT tell 'filipinos came from Spain', but filipinos are forgeting the history before 1565 and only projecting Spanish colonized years. Funny thing is that they are proud about it! There were many colonies in this world India, China, Myanmar, Thailand, etc. Ask them whether they are proud about it or not. Ask Indians, if you are calling them Elizebethans, what they will feel? It is not barbarians were living in Philippines before Spaniards. The first inhabitants reached the islands before 40000BP. By about 2000BC Austronesians reached. Hindu-Budhist kingdoms influence can see after 200AD. India was importing Gold from Philippines in that time. The rule of Sri Vijaya dynasty you can see from 650AD-1377AD. Then Majapahit dynasty from 1292AD-1478AD. There were no inquisition or abuse over culture in these times. They were the native people. The this foreigners, Spaniards came. And you people are only proud about these Spaniads? Be fair to the ancestors. They were having the rich culture. |

ahh... sorry if i misunderstood you... mmm... many of us do forget... a lot of our pre-spanish history and culture got lost... many college graduate doesn't even know about the two empires you mentioned... sad because we were a part of the majapahit empire and a large part of the population call themselves visayans... they don't know that visaya was pre-spanish and a very proud name at that... but i'm proud of all those foreign influences including those of the spanish and americans (the good influences only i hope) because those made us who we are today... |

1 Indeed Spaniards and Americas had given their contributions to the Philippines. But why the people should behave like victims? This bowing head in front of the word Spain or anything related to Spain is nothing but the result of the psychological trauma, the result of 400 years of suppression. European Rulers always tried to destroy the historical evidences of the past like Muslim rulers. Do you know Afghanistan was a Hindu-Buddhist nation. Now it is the center for Muslim terrorism. Spaniards did the same thing to Philippines. It is sad that educational department of Philippines is not focusing in to the Pre-Hispanic history. |

Bornleader,
My answer was based on your subject being discussed as Spaniards destroyed the soul of phil. I answered your call, right?? so why now you are redirecting my view on a different light???? & you refered now to pre spanish era??? we dont deny our ancestors being aetas, indonesians & Malays who possesed its own civilization at that period. They have their own writing, religious beliefs, community & trade way before the Spaniards came in Phil. island. If thats what you wanted to hear. a Pinoy historian made a mistake of stating that Magellan discovered PHil. i hope this was corrected in the text books of high school students in phil. Its a series of events that contributed to the legacy of what is the modern day Filipinos now, the present day Filipinos. |

People behaving victims????where did you get that idea???
you are trying to say that we should use & practice what was originally being practice by our ancestor 600 years ago! are you kidding??! Even you, i dont think you will practice what your ancestors practicing at that time. You know the word,'moving on' that is what we are doing. Because of Spaniards, the island of phil was united. Thanks to them. If Spanish did not came, our nationality might be scattered around or worst part of Indonesia. Muslim, yuuuuk! i dont want to be belong to backward mentality! But we are who we are now. We dont cry over spilled milk like what Indians do. |
||||

Lets compare now, if you are given a chance, where do you want to go??? Spain, India or America???? i bet you would consider Spain or USA!

Ha! If you given me choice of Spain, US and India. I will choose India. Two months back it happened, my US friend asked me to go there. I told I want to be in India. I want to a part of the development of India ( and off course the development of all underdeveloped countries and people). Come to India. Now you can see white people are working here. Who told you to go back to 500 years? I am talking about instilling the nationalistic spirit. So that the people will concentrate in the development of the country. Most of the Filipinos wants to fly to US and Spain. Who is there to develop the country? Off course there is no issue in going abroad and doing job. But if majority of the people thinks like that? When Filipinos saw China is becoming a Super Power few of them started talking about their Chinese blood! Where are the Filipinos who are proud about their own blood rather than Spanish blood and Chinese blood? Why Muslims 'yuuuk'?! Mindanoa people are also integral part of Philippines. Forgive them for the wrong things they are doing but respect them, they are also human beings. There is no difference between European and Arabian conquerors. Both came for trade. Both conquered. Inquisition is a kind a forced conversion, Muslims also do that. Why this hatred mentality between tribes? When i asked my Ilocano friend about Southern Filipinas, do you know what was the answer?'Sothern Filipinas are prostitutes'! I felt sad about it. |

Senselessthinker,
you can say that again. But still Phil has still the most english speaking country in Asia & Phil is still has the best musical artist in asia. i agree with you about the educational system in Phil really needs an overhaul. We have brilliant students, they need a more concrete support & guidance from the government. By allowing the highshools & college students to participate actively in any decision making body of the government! |

Really?! you prefer to stay, why theres so many Indians all over the world??even in Phil?? Like Chinese! we are not even rich! Its your personal decision to stay. ok! Its your right, i wouldnt force you to go where you dont want. hehehhe Yeah I noticed that tribal hatred between Filipinos! its just we cant live 1 day without hating each other or pulling each others hair. I cant imagine Filipinos being nice with each other!or looking after the welfare of their compatriot without ulterior motive. Thats why the boat is singking slowly slowly coz no body cares, no body even bothers why the phil economy is bad and why the salary of a common working class Pinoy is so low that no one can live decently with this peanut wages! Thats the reason i left the country! they dont care! So i dont care either! |
