I just saw the video today at NG... I am a Filipino and so I waited and watched every detail of the story... And yes, the 1st question on my mind was why is he kidnapped in Cebu? It would not be that easy for the Abu sayyaf group to do their mission there and without the connivance of the taxi cab who was also kidnapped in the story... So, I searched in the internet to find out more about Greg Williams' kidnapping because can't remember also in the news about him... If its true, it must be published in the newspapers, especially in television... Then I found this comments about his fake kidnapping story... Well, I realized why I do have many questions while watching the video, its because the story is fabricated!

Andy, obviously you were not aware of the large groups of people who were kidnapped in broad daylight, and then robbed in shopping malls in Manila. Also, check out how even the wife of the Italian ambassador was assaulted and robbed last week right in the middle of an electonics store, also in Manila. I myself have been robbed three times while living in the Philippines.

By the way, I have a book to be published next year "Terror Truncated: The demise of the Abu Sayyaf from the crucial year 2002" Guess what? there is nothing in it about citizen Greg Williams.

Please wait...
Upon close scrutiny and after studying all the characters and their involvements, it's clear that the story is a hoax with a higher case H.
G. Williams has concocted a melodramatic story with the end game to make plenty of money - and he did - by fooling thousands of people who believed him!
What a crying shame for Williams and what a bull for those who believe in him!

I grew up in the city of Cebu, and worked near the barges, ship yards or cargo piers...I have never heard anything about the Abu Sayyaf kidnapping in Cebu. That's weird when an American talks about kidnapping in 1996 in Cebu city while major hostage issue was happening in Basilan, Mindanao on that same year. The Filipino government usually would televise this news everywhere and everyday. There was no news about his disappearance or any negotiations made. Abu Sayyaf ALWAYS wants $$, no matter what and usually kidnaps tourists in secluded areas and beaches in Mindanao. The cargo area didn't make sense to me.
William's story was bogus.

I just watch this Greg Williams kidnapping on Nat Geo I am filipino who grew up in cebu and station now in zamboanga city. His story is a fake, travel time from cebu where he was kidnapped to basilan or jolo where abu sabaya was stationed, will take you two or three days by boat. So its impossible that it happen in cebu and traveled by boat. Authorities would have easily notice them. Also living in southern phils ( we are just two hour boat ride to basilan) the abu sayaff would not kidnapped a foreigner in broad day light in a big city like cebu, its too far for them and too risky. So its impossible that it happen. The story is a hoax....

Hi I am Renz from Bukidnon, Mindanao, PH.
Just watched the show on Nat'l Geo and I am very doubtful with the story. Why would ASG follow him if their target was the blind prophet? Isnt it doubtful that they were able to locate Williams, but not the blind prophet? And why are they so keen in tracing Williams and kidnap him? When they could have do it on the blind prophet. And, it is kind of impossible that an ASG will kidnap someone in Cebu during that year (1996). And ASG kidnaps people in bulk... He said that he was hit by the bayonet or something in Cebu and this knocked him out. He gains conscious when he notices that he senses that he is approaching beach (probably among the Sulu/Tawi tawi islands). Cebu is quite far from those islands, I must say that its impossible that he was unconscious for a day or two during the trip.
The only thing that can identify be truth behind this is the PH Immigration records (for his length of length of stay, etc.) and the US embassy in the PH.

Anybody else who doesn't assume it is fake, like the dumbshit who wrote this article, but maybe the group lied to him? Maybe Abu Sayaaf was hiding out on the island and needed extra money. It's ignorant to just say its fake.

Don the American wrote: <quoted text> Sick buffalo LOL!!! Abu sayaf would not come to Cebu because we, the Cebuanos, would be the ones to cut their heads off. If it happened in Cebu, it would be all over the news. Cebu is a small city, kidnapping someone there would be a very stupid move.

By the way, if he would have been kidnapped by the Abu sayaf, he wouldn't need a translator. They know how to speak English. Ask Gracia Burnham who was kidnapped and even lost her husband, Martin, as they were rescued.

I believe it did happend.
...joseph=yusuf
..and the reason why greg williams was not listed as abu sabaya's kidnapping victim is: He escaped before any demands were made.
