Burqa has no place in France, says Sarkozy

PARIS, June 22: President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Monday that burqa, garment that covers women from head to toe and hides their faces, had no place in France as they were a sign of the subjugation of women.
During a solemn speech to parliament on a wide range of issues, Sarkozy backed an initiative launched by legislators last week who expressed concern over an increase in the use of burqa in France.
“The issue of the burqa is not a religious issue, it is a question of freedom and of women’s dignity,” Sarkozy told a joint session of both houses of parliament, held at the Palace of Versailles.
“The burqa is not a religious sign, it is a sign of the subjugation, of the submission of women. I want to say solemnly that it will not be welcome on our territory,” he said to strong applause.
Referring to a cross-party initiative by close to 60 legislators last week, who proposed a parliamentary commission to look into the spread of the burqa and find ways to combat the trend, Sarkozy said it was the right way to proceed.
“A debate has to take place and all views must be expressed.
What better place than parliament for this? I tell you, we must not be ashamed of our values, we must not be afraid of defending them,” he said.
The debate about the burqa is reminiscent of a controversy that raged for a decade in France about Muslim girls wearing headscarves in class. Eventually, a law was passed in 2004 banning pupils from wearing conspicuous signs of their religion at state schools.
Critics say the law stigmatised Muslims at a time when the country should be fighting discrimination in the job and housing markets that has caused a rift between mainstream society and many youths from an immigrant background.
The last presidential speech to France’s parliament was in 1873, before lawmakers banned the practice to protect the separation of powers and keep the president in check.

Burqa and Nun's habit are not the same. President Sarkozy is not banning hijab where face is seen. Burqa dress is a prison for a woman, not freedom. Even if a woman chooses Burqa it is a prison imposed by her menfolk or older ladies who would not want for a younger what they did not have!

No proper hearing is given to this non muslims in the courts and religious courts apply muslim laws even to these non muslims whose limbs are chopped off and in case of capital punishment heads r chopped off.YET U CALL THIS DEMOCRACY.

Hey Clark, we don't need democracy certificate from people who don't know anything about democracy. Why don't you show me any muslim country where real democracy exists? If you think there is democracy and all other religions are protected then you need to go to hospital to fix your brain. Almost 90% of post independent pakistan era has been dictator or army rule. How can you say that Pakistan is most secular when hindus and shikhs in Pakistan are treated like second grade citizens except very few exceptions. Look on Indian side, if you are literate and capable India has made muslims presidents, vice presidents, chief ministers. Now show me even one post where you guys promoted hindu or shikh. You talk different and walk different. That's in muslims' blood. We don't trust you because you never acted the way you talked. Kargil war is an example. Let's believe India is involved in terrorism inside Pakistan. That could be just a reward India got helping Taliban take over Pakistan.
