Chathams Pacific airline pulling out of Tonga

Tonga's sole domestic inter-islands airline, the Chathams Pacific will discontinue its scheduled air services in Tonga on Saturday 3 March 2013, after less than five years operation, due to a loss of business confidence, after the Tonga government moved to procure aircraft from China.

LOL.. tonga is always looking for a good deal. If they continue this way, they may end up using inter island canoes. They fcked up on the ferry, fcked up on the Royal Tongan Airlines, and they just don't seem to get anything right. sheesh!!! smh!!!

lol@ inter island canoes...From what i read, Chathams was providing good service and was only getting a small return... Thank China for this.

yea, I've been in one of their small 15 passenger planes. from Tongatapu to Vava'u... though it felt like I was riding a toyota hatchback through the bumpiest roads of a safari, it got us there and back. I guess Chatham felt offended and realized that a loss of any business in Tonga is major considering they were making peanuts in the first place when they were the only choice for interisland flights.

Emeline Tuita has been appointed as the new CEO of the Tonga Rugby Union for one year,'Epeli Taione the TRU chairman announced today.

He said the TRU board approved 'Emeline's appointment two days ago after she was shortlisted with two others during a board meeting on Friday January 11.

"TRU is delighted to have its first woman CEO and to show that women play a major part in a male-dominated sport and the board wish her well," he said.

He said seven applied for the position and three shortlisted were Fuka Kitekei'aho, Peni Fukofuka and 'Emeline Tuita.

The CEO's appointment is for a one year, and open for review based on performance, said 'Epeli.

'Emeline was a former Tonga Ambassador to the People's Republic of China.

A woman has previously served on the board with ' Aloma Johansson the first woman director of the then Tonga Rugby Union Authority in 2010.

I am shocked at the news about Chathams Pacific pulling out of Tonga. This is going to be a major step backwards for tourism and the people of Tonga.

I have traveled from Auckland to Vava'u seven times in the last six years and can say that all the other airlines in Tonga before Chathams Pacific were all mediocre at best. All my previous flights on Airlines Tonga and Peau Vava'u for example were all excessively delayed, cancelled, over-sold or over-weight. Communication was non-existent and the staff did not seem to really care.

The last thing Tonga needs now (when tourism is about to take off) is more corruption and a poorly-run airline with the wrong aircraft.

well am already considering cancelling my holiday booked for august which is sad but personal safety and reliability are important and i dont trust a new govt airline. i bet the prices will be way more expensive!
my life is not worth a botched holiday flight!

Another coffin for the people of Tonga. In an era of advancing technology, Tonga instead of going forward is happy to rewind the clock back a decade by buying planes from China which were used during World War 2. (ie, plane that needs a whole good 24 hrs to warm up, much, much longer tarmac otherwise it won't be able to take off nor landing, open windows because there is no air-con, u have to bring your own snacks and refreshments and u won't be able to go to the loo during flight because there is none on board and lastly but not the least you have to bring a mat to sit on with heaps of cushions for your comfort because there ain't no seats in this type of plane...uummm one more thing do not forget an umbrella in case of an emergency so that you could use it as a parachute. All the very BEST to Chathams Airlines.

so it has come down to this, after this hillbilly corrupt government has shut down the Marine College, the polytechnic and just about every other post high-school educational facility, they are now prostituting out our young men as labourers to white man's corporations as complacent manual labourers. They are promoting our proud young men as if they are cockroaches scavenging around looking for a feed. Just look at the educational abilities of tongan children when they get an opportunity to go to college and university, in Australia we have many higher ranking citizens in responsible jobs, per example up to recently the governor of the largest jail in New South Wales was a tongan. Many students at medical school in Sydney's universities are tongan.
We are a bright and intelligent race of people, governed and manipulated by fools

I think people are happy to go work at those farms in Auz. It's good money for them. If they white or not, doesn't matter. Yes, I think its bit harsh the way you described it :(

Tonga’s opposition Democratic Party says the government planned the development of the Vuna Wharf in Nukualofa poorly.

It says unfinished parts of the wharf are an eye-sore and a potential threat to the environment.

Funded with a 17 million US dollar loan from China, the wharf is open for cruise ships while a section earmarked for a marina is incomplete as more funds are being sought to complete it.

The oppostion leader, Akilisi Pohiva, says the project has been flawed.

“My view is that the other part that is yet to be finished spoils the whole scene. I think the government is now looking for funds. There is no way that our current budget or the next budget, there is no way the government can allocate part of the next budget for this particular project. It is a waste of our limited resources.”

Akilisi Pohiva.

At least three cruise ships have used the wharf since it was officially opened last year.
