Condolences especially to the family of Jacintha Saldanha who, unless it is proven otherwise appears to have taken her own life over this.
Her family and friends are grieving.
The Hospital and Jacinta's nursing colleagues have been hurt.
No doubt the Royal Family are hurting over Jacinta's fate.
Many of the public are hurting.
Radio 2Day FM will be hurting.
And to be fair, Mel Greig and Michael Christian are hurting, probably more than anyone else apart from Jacinta's family. Not only did they not foresee their prank ending up like this, it would have been the last thing they would have wanted.
Radio pranks are played around the world every day, and some are doozies! This one happened to backfire big time. The prank they played was no worse than many others in their industry, but obviously the outcome was uniquely worse.
As someone on Channel 7 remarked this morning, pranks are all very well, but we can never be sure who is on the other end or what their vulnerabilities might be. That risk is alway present.
It's easy for all us armchair experts to be ever-so-wise in hindsight ... perhaps Mel and Michael should have pulled the pin as soon as they realized they had gotten further along with the prank than they ever expected. Perhaps they themselves were too stunned to know quite what to do when they realized that, and it spiraled out of control.
It sounds a sobering warning for their industry, but hopefully it will not precipitate an avalanche of Politically Correct overkill in policy formulation.
That said, it seems inevitable that Racially embittered opportunists will now want to unleash their self-serving fury. That at least IS predictable.
