Other news media, the Business Insider Australia, National Review Online and U-T San Diego, have in the last day reported that Tongan soldiers serving in Afghanistan have a reputation for “sleeping on the Job”.

Business Insider Australia reported yesterday that the “Security for the part of the base the Taliban attacked fell to a small team of forces from the Pacific nation of Tonga who were notorious for falling asleep on post.”

The news website U-T San Diego reported “amid the drawdown of forces, security cutbacks had caused guard towers to be manned in some cases by nothing more than target dummies or poorly-trained Tongan troops who frequently fell asleep on the job, several senior military sources told U-T San Diego.”

Tongan soldiers

The 55 Tongan soliders who were serving in Camp Bastion during the raid were part of Tonga’s 4th contingent to Afghanistan. They returned to Tonga in November 2012, and were replaced by the 5th Contingent.

Today in Nuku‘alofa, Captain Toni Fonokalafi, the Acting Commander of the Tongan armed forces, said he was the commander of the 5th Contingent to Afghanistan, who arrived in the United Kingdom for training on the same day as the September 2012 attack on Camp Bastion. They were preparing to relieve Tonga's 4th Contingent at Camp Bastion.

He said he had not seen the final report of the US military investigation into the attack, although there was an earlier report that he had read blaming the British and the Tongans.

“There was an acceptance that at the time of the attack there was complacency with security in the area.

“There were two towers, one was manned by the Tongans and the other was vacated, although during the day Tongan soldiers would go over and show that there were security officers at that tower.

“The intruders, however, got into the camp between the two towers,” he said.

Capt. Fonokalafi described the terrain as “high in areas.” He said the ground was flattened following the incident.

Tonga's Brigadier General Tau‘aika ‘Uta‘atu is currently overseas and was not available for comment.

Aaahh the infamous Tongan warriors, speciality: napping on the job.

The news website U-T San Diego reported "Amid the drawdown of forces, security cutbacks had caused guard towers to be manned in some cases by nothing more than target dummies or poorly-trained Tongan troops who frequently fell asleep on the job, several senior military sources told U-T San Diego."

“Security for the part of the base the Taliban attacked fell to a small team of forces from the Pacific nation of Tonga who were notorious for falling asleep on post.”

They were assigned to a simple task but failed to even carry that out resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage in Military equipment, not to mention the joke of a reputation the TDS obviously already have.

It's algud though, you guys will get there one day.

LOL they weren't out in the desert fighting Taliban they were assigned to the simple task of keeping lookout over part of a base and they failed miserably at doing even that.

Please don't try and start a debate about Tongan soldiers compared to Fijians, you will lose that 1 everytime. Your poorly trained soldiers are renowned for sleeping on the job, that is all.

But much love to the Tongan soldiers for trying, they will hopefully get there one day.

You are obviously clueless as to the thousands of Fijians fighting in Afghanistan, and several other conflict zones the world over as we speak. We are fighting on all fronts and our Military contributions to War far outweigh any of our Pacific Island neighbors by far, no contest.

How many Tongans are in any special forces units around the world? I've never heard of any yet, all while Fijians are praised as Warriors throughout special forces circles throughout the world for many decades.

You are out of your depth when it comes to debates like these so just try to be humble and accept the reality of things for once.

Haha very quick to back down once the challenge was laid down weren't you? typical Tongan. No match for the vast amounts of elite soldiers Fiji has produced. White people even build statues of us In the U.K in praise of Fijian war heroes.

We are all just having a laugh at the joke of a military Tonga has, and you are just butthurt at the reality of things lol.

Take it on the chin tenga.

This is a disgrace that Tonga soldiers have brought shame on us. Not being alert on sentry duty is a Court Marshal offence, to be sleeping is even worse. As the result of this negligence 2 soldiers died and 200 million dollars of equipment was destroyd. Lance Corporal Fonokalafi should be sent to the US to meet the parents, the families, the wives, the children of the soldiers who died and tell them why there was a lack of discipline in his command.. On his return he should be court marshalled and if convicted dishonorobly discharged he is a disgrace to his uniform, but this is Yonga so he will ptobably be made a lord and given the rank of brigadeer general admiral air commodore.
