All Eyes on South Australia

Jun 24, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Blaze

While a federal amendment that sought to give legal recognition to same-sex marriages conducted overseas was defeated last week, a bill to allow same-sex couples to marry was introduced in South Australia, keeping marriage equality firmly placed in the political agenda.

I guess this will become another issue that will go to a "Conscience Vote" in the House.

Once again will be treated to the spectacle of a mere few dozen parliamentarians swarming like Lemmings to lodge their heartfelt votes "on our behalf" ...(ostensibly).

That is precisely the objection I have to so-called 'conscience votes' of this kind.

WHOSE conscience??? Mine? Yours? Have you been asked? I haven't.

Have our ever-so-worthy parliamentarians actually bothered to sound out the values of their thousands of constituents?

At the last ballot box we voted according to the published policies of candidates as divulged to us the voters at that time.

Was Gay Marriage mentioned?

It seems that those in parliament enjoying the privilege of a 'conscience vote' are serving no one's values but their own.

So the 'Elephant In The Room' is the very legitimate question:

"When was it decided that the so-called "conscience" of a few politicians is somehow superior to yours, mine, or anyone else's?"

Does their conscience somehow magically transcend that of the broader community? What is the guarantee of that?

By its very nature Gay Marriage, like many contentious issues, affects the collective values of the society to which it aspires.

Surely then, if ever there was an issue that should go to Public Referendum it is this one.

If the outcome then reflects what a "conscience vote" by a few mere mortals in Parliament would have chosen, then so be it. At least we will have reassurance that "The tail is not wagging the dog".

LOL!!

In case you didn't already know, "South Australia" is a State within Australia, with my hometown "Adelaide" as its capital.

Late one Friday afternoon when planners had run out of imagination, impatient to knock off early and dash to the local Pub, "South Australia" was named in a hurry as they fled out the door.:)

My conscience would oblige me to to at least consult wider community values.

I would have thought that would have been clear from my opening post, which everyone here seems petrified to acknowledge:

Well, that depends what those community values are. But yes, that is supposed to be the basis of democracy.

I'm fairly certain that I would not pander so.

I would look to coherence in legal logic.
