Hand sanitizer: just a public ritual

Everywhere I go, there is a pump bottle of hand sanitizer on the counter. By everywhere, I mean everywhere - banks, stores, doctor's offices, car dealerships, you name it.

I saw hand sanitizer at the veterinarian's office today. Was I supposed to wipe down the pooch's paws?

Those hand sanitizers contain 60% alcohol I carry a little bottle of vodka that is only 40% and a little sip after every time I have contact with people keeps me healthy.
