This is a rather unfortunate incident. We can only be grateful that everyone eventually arrived safely at their destination. Who will foot the bill we will wait and see but again this highlights the need for Niue to undertake a strategic upgrading and management of its major infrastructure. Most if not all of our national utilities needs to be overhauled if not replaced.
Alison Baxter in one of her presentations highlights the need for NZ to invest in the development of Niue's infrastructure as pertinent to our future viability. If not approach with some degree of urgency Niue will continue like headless chooks. Power problems is not new news, and what next? The $20m promised under the MOA targeted at infrastructure development in 2004 is taking forever to be released. Priority development focus for Niue are: Upgrade of Power Development of Tourism Infrastructure and services including Airport upgrade Resealing of roads Wharf development. Unless these projects are put in place Niue will continue to have a bumpy ride. |

it would be wonderful if the state of Niue were as easy to fix as it is easy to talk about. The situation further hindered by enormous debt, and poorly supported initiatives. There is no quick fix and most definitely an urgency. It is harsh to say headless chooks though the resemblence is quite accurate. (hehehe) I would like to see more visible government accountability and for those who are under performing a replacement found for that individual/s quick smart. The repeated bumpy road to some is familiar and perhaps able to be tackled, the unknown yet to be tackled too scarey for some.
