Adam, when we get interested in savages yelling at each other, stomping their feet, rolling their eyes and making animal noises, we'll let you know.
Seriously, how could anyone get into that crap?

It seems to be the noisiest group of savages, the ones that yell and stompt their feet the loudest, wins.
Fair go though, what a ridiculous spectacle.

No more ridiculous than grown men in England dressing up like Vikings and parading themselves around.

Possibly it's about cultural heritage. Laugh at one, you have to laugh at them all.

It look's like it's about attempting to intimidate or bluff another tribe so they wont try to attack.
But those days are gone, now you've all got a state house, fried chicken and endless taxpayer sponsored handouts.

I would like to know with Te Iti Kahurangi taking 1st place and 2nd an 3rd in ALOT of areas how did they not place 1st or for that matter 2nd I'd vote No confidence in how judging is done how can U give out 1st an 2 nd places when overall u don't win the main event an I'm sure WHANAU Apanui dropped a korowai Come on I really dont think that's fair play,
Makes u think is it really worthwhile supporting this Maori Event when u already know who's going to win,But Congrates to Waka Huia when u only placed 3rd in 2 areas,SORI JUST WONDERING ???

whakarongo ki a timoti karetu e korero ana e pa ana ki tenei kaupapa.....

each group performs once, then the scores are added up,...the top 8 teams are chosen...then there is a finals 'playoff' where all teams start again on zero points.

who ever takes it out on the final day...wins.... in this case te waka huia's final performance took it out...

people not in the top 8 can win individual categories,... but over all winner goes to the best group in the finals...

If the other savages had yelled louder and stomped their feet more, they may have won it.

over 3 days 40 teams compete for a spot in the final 8. on the last day the final eight perform again for the judges....

the 8 teams are judged solely on their final performance... when the points were counted, te waka huia scored the most points and took first place.

its been going for 40 years now, the rules have remained the same year after year.

there are no spoils to be divvied up other than the right to say your group won.....

very good question! I asked the exact same question myself.... To which i recieved an excellent explaination. It is best explained as follows. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings in each individual item are bassed on the 1st performance of each group ( not the performance on the finals ) that is why groups that didnt perform
In the finals were called out in prize giving. The 9 teams that were fortunate to make the finals then started on a clean slate to compete for the overall winner trophy (duncan mckintyre) all items were judged and scores from each item were added together to determine the overall winner....THIS is where the confusion comes in!!! What people dont know is that Te waka huia were penalised five points before they took the stage for their first performance!... Instantnly they were 5 points behind all other teams.... Hence why they only placed 3rd nd 2nd in items. On The finals that 5 point penalty was not in play... Everyone started on zero.. Not minus 5. Confusing, i know... But it was only confusing because people didnt know that they had a 5 point penalty in the first round... If that wasnt the case they probably would of won alot of items...??? Maybe, i dont know.
