he United States supports Georgia as it works to establish a closer relationship with NATO, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said.

Kerry met in Washington with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. Kerry praised the role Georgia plays in providing the largest number of troops to the Afghan campaign of any non-NATO member.

Saakashvili said he wanted U.S. support for its bid to join the alliance, saying moving closer to the West was "crucial" for his country's survival.

"We are very supportive of Georgia's aspirations with respect to NATO and Europe," Kerry said.

By its own rules, NATO cannot accept a country with contested borders.

Kerry is playing less the legitimate diplomat and more the fool.

Kerry's just humoring Saakashvili. It'll never go anywhere.

In a speech that has gotten very little coverage in the U.S. media, German chancellor Merkel, without naming any countries in particular, laid out her view of the criteria that should guide invitations to join NATO.

1) "A country should become a NATO member not only when its temporary political leadership is in favour but when a significant percentage of the population supports membership."

2) "Countries that are themselves entangled in regional conflicts, can in my opinion not become members."

The first criterion seems to be directed at Ukraine, where a majority of the population opposes or is ambivalent about NATO membership. The second seems to be directed at Georgia.

As the super powers are continuing to polarize the world and knowing who your friends are is extremely important... I think a larger alliance group should be formed by the United States.

An alliance of protectorate entities. This would be able to include NATO, Israel, South korea, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Georgia, even the Kurdish party in Iraq and scattered democratic parties across the globe.

I know some may argue this is what United Nations is for, but in many ways it is not what the UN has become.

NATO is restrictive 'attack on one is an attack on all'

It should be more like support each other for any of it's valid needs.

Probably to keep McCain out of his arsehairs. McCain's staff had a nice paid PR thing going with Saakiman.

PS: I saw some of that "Five Day War" flop Saaki paid for, with what'sis Garcia playing Saaki. Absolutely atrocious piece of work, artistically speaking. A five year old with his cell phone camcorder could've done better. Poor Garcia.

Georgia entry into Nato will happen. There has been American troops there for years. This country escaped Putins grasp and was liberated by the protective hand of the States.

You lot have probably forgotten that Saakashvili will be kicked out of power soon,

long before Georgia gets round to joining that despicable racist organisation Nato,

by then wiser people will run Georgia. Hehehehe.

What do you call it when an American aircraft carrier battle group arrives at a friendly nations border while that nation is battling an invading army. American marines took up defensive land positions. With battle group resources a firm dug in defensive ended the Russian push. Georgia had troops in Iraq , Americans protect their friends.

Oliver, you know as well as I do that the Russians only support Serbs because they are their "Slavic brothers", nothing more.

Surely the Serbs murdered more people than they admit to.

Is that even true??? I remember we trained the Georgians and I think supplied them with weapons but I don't remember having US troops there...

I also don't remember Russia going into Georgia, but I think that was by CHOICE, not because there were any American Marines at the border. You have proof of this? Post it please.

If there were American Marines there, why did Georgia lose N. Ossetia and Abkhazia? ;)
