(AP)-- Greece faced power outages on Monday as employees at the main power utility began 48-hour rolling strikes to protest the company's privatization, part of austerity plans needed to avoid a national debt default.

Eurozone ministers put next tranche of loans for Greece on HOLD!

The fifth tranche of loans, which amount to 12 billion euros (16.9 billion U.S. dollars), was originally planned to be handed to Greece this month so that Athens could pay back its maturing debts, but it was held off due the country's failure to meet austerity targets.

If Greece could not get the next tranche of loans in time, it would be unable to pay its debts maturing in July and face the imminent risk of default.

Or to put it another way, threats are only worth making if those making the threats could actually carry them out.

Papandreou has dumped Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou and replaced him with Evangelos Venizelos (Ex surname Turkoglou!)

But unless the ex-defence minister plans to call in the troops and shoot bondholders, there appears little Athens can do to resolve its troubles amid mounting fears it will be forced to default on its debt.

European finance ministers have been forced to delay a crucial decision on the release of a 12 billion tranche of their Greek bail-out package.

'We forcefully remind the Greek government that by the end of the month they have to see to it that we are all convinced that all the commitments they have made are fulfilled.'

Athens is on the brink of a financial meltdown

Doom and gloom merchants are predicting that Greece will be the first

The reasons behind Greece's potential bankruptcy are simple; the country CANNOT afford to pay its 340 billion (Dh1.79 trillion) debt and almost 50 per cent of its people don't feel like tightening their belts or paying increased taxes

One-size euro no longer fits all

The crisis in Greece has prompted an increasing number of economists to float an idea that crippled economies such as Greece should EXIT the euro.

Greece runs out of options to stave off economic collapse.

Even if Europe backs the release of the funds, this is unlikely to provide much resolution to the long-term debt problems of Greece.

Greece will end up defaulting on its debts.

"Talk of some form of private sector voluntary restructuring of debt for senior bondholders had soothed some market concerns of an imminent default, though it is hard to see why any investor would voluntarily accept a 'debt haircut' while others could refuse," said CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson.
