Sofia first became part of the First Bulgarian Empire during the reign of Khan Krum in 809, after a long siege.[14] Afterwards, it was known by the Bulgarian name "Sredets" and grew into an important fortress and administrative centre. After the fall of North-eastern Bulgaria under John I Tzimiskes' armies in 971, the Bulgarian Patriarch Damyan chose Sofia for his seat in the next year. After a number of unsuccessful sieges, the city fell to the Byzantine Empire in 1018, but once again was incorporated into the restored Bulgarian Empire at the time of Tsar Ivan Asen I.
From the 12th to the 14th century, Sofia was a thriving centre of trade and crafts. It is possible that it had been called by the common population Sofia (meaning "wisdom" in Ancient Greek) about 1376 after the church of Saint Sophia. However, in different testimonies it was called both "Sofia" and "Sredets" until the end of the 19th century. In 1382, Sofia was seized by the Ottoman Empire in the course of the Bulgarian-Ottoman Wars after a long siege. Around 1393 it became the seat of newly established Sanjak of Sofia.[15]
Sophia (Σο&#966 ;íα, Greek for "wisdom") is a central idea in Hellenistic philosophy and religion, Platonism, Gnosticism, Orthodox Christianity, Esoteric Christianity, as well as Christian mysticism. Sophiology is a philosophical concept regarding wisdom, as well as a theological concept regarding the wisdom of the biblical God.
Sophia is honored as a goddess of wisdom by Gnostics, as well as by some Neopagan, New Age, and feminist-inspired Goddess spirituality groups. In Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christianity, Sophia, or rather Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom), is an expression of understanding of the Holy Spirit,(as in the dedication of the church of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul) as well as in the Old Testament, as seen in the Book of Proverbs 9:1, but not an angel or goddess.
Plato, following his teacher, Socrates (and, it is likely, the older tradition of Pythagoras), understands philosophy as philo-sophia, or, literally, the love of Wisdom. This understanding of philosophia permeates Plato's dialogues, especially the Republic. In that work, the leaders of the proposed utopia are to be philosopher kings: rulers who love sophia, Wisdom.
Sophia is one of the four cardinal virtues in Plato's Protagoras.
The Pythian Oracle (Oracle of Delphi) reportedly answered the question of "who is the wisest man of Greece?" with "Socrates!" Socrates defends this verdict in his Apology to the effect that he, at least, knows that he knows nothing. As is evident in Plato's portrayals of Socrates, this does not mean Socrates' wisdom was the same as knowing nothing; but rather that his skepticism towards his own self-made constructions of knowledge left him free to receive true Wisdom as a spontaneous insight or inspiration. This contrasted with the attitude of contemporaneous Greek Sophists, who claimed to be wise and offered to teach wisdom for pay.
It is a very popular name for women in Greece. How about in Bulgaria?

"The first signs of written communication is rooted in the Macedonian rocks, two millenniums before the ancient Egyptians started their writing and just as before Sumerians," claims Marco Merlini, head of the department of archeology at the University of Sibiu,Romania and director of the Institute for Archeomitology in Rome.

"The system of writing that developed in prehistorical Macedonia dates some 2000 years before it apeared in Egyptian and Sumerian writings," argues Dr. Marco Merlini - an expert of Rock Art. Scientists are unanimous in the assessment - Rock Art is Macedonias personal ID that proudly identifies it's culture and history in the scientific world.

"Macedonia became a kind of Jerusalem for prehistoric Rock Art and not only in Europe but generally," conclude Duško Aleksovski - Rock Art professor at 'Gotse Delchev' University in Štip.

Although that in the 70's of the last century the Macedonian Rock Art had certain dificulties of gaining the recognition in the scientific circles, the arguments of around 1million and 30 thousand drawings and photographs made at 30 sites in Macedonia has won any skepticism. Now they're part of the teaching research program at the 'Goce Delchev' University.

The ancient Macedonian alphabet
(Translated from German)

The ancient Macedonian alphabet was on regional use of around 800 BC.

From 864 AD it was gradually replaced by the new Alphabet developed by Cyril & Methodius - the Glagolitic. Since about 1000 AD the modern Macedonian alphabet was used, known as the "Cyrillic alphabet".

The ancient Macedonian alphabet is now used only by "Greex" since 1836 and is known worldwide as the (so-called) "Greek alphabet". Along with the establishment of the state of "Greece" and the sole use of the Macedonian alphabet by the "Greex", it has established the name "Greek alphabet".

(But) The names of the letters have no meaning in "Greek". The names of the letters were given to them by Macedonians and (only in) Macedonian they have a meaning.

King of Macedon Karanos introduced this new Macedonian script, as he went from Argos (Pelasg) to Aigai that lays to the north, where they founded the Macedonian Kingdom (ca. 798 BC).
In Argos until then an older Pelasgian-Macedonian script was used.
