What happened to Islam's 'sublime' culture?

Jul 14, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: The News Journal

Hisham Melhem, a prominent Lebanese journalist, recalls an emotional visit to the Great Mosque of Cordoba in southern Spain last May. With tears in his eyes, he found himself wondering how the Arab Muslim genius of a thousand years ago had veered in modern times toward such chaos and repression ...

from The News Journal:

"Melhem contrasts this ninth-century tolerance with the 'sectarian cancer' that today is eating Syria, Iraq and so many other Arab nations. He wrote in An Nahar:'Today’s Middle Eastern Muslims, with their narrow sectarian awareness, appear extremely far from the humane sources that under Islam made them the second civilization after the great Romans ...'

"The Cordoban spirit was described by Maria Rosa Menocal ... She described how the Arab Muslim rulers of the time promoted a freedom of thought that, in addition to producing great art and the beginnings of modern mathematics and science, also allowed other religions to prosper ..."

... by taxing them as dhimmis?

Islam has always spread by the sword.

You'd do better to busy yourself with the Zimmerman trial and the Kardashians than espouse on historical issues you're completely ignorant of.

The Taliban interpretation of Islam, you mean. Last I heard, music permeates the Islamic world. Very rich, rhythmic and polytonal, in fact.

Another one , let me guess the heavenly virtue you exude is concealed in the Soul of your shoe.
That's why no body knows it's there .?
Am I right or whatever ??.
When it is Sunnie or Shi'ia the difference compared to other religions is clear, Islam built the blanket on which rests the whole wide world can rest without fear.
The article poses religion as an artistic pursuit.
Which of course its not.
It is the paradigm of recent history to put paid to the impediment that you represent.
Just joking.

You cannot compare that muslims with actual muslims. The muslims that governed in Andalusia on that time had during short time only a Calipha not a prophet. At that moment the Christians and the muslims were in ceasefire. Thats why in that the commercial trades and the living together was something normal. So in that time, the muslims of spain were free in do wat they want. But in other part of muslim empire was seen as a weakness of islam against Christians and Jews. So the muslims calipha in Saudi Arabia sent a muslim prophet in order to stablished the islam with an iron fist supported by one of the biggest muslim army created in africa. The objective of the muslim prophet was to stablished the islam as the unique religion and destroy the Spanish Christians Kingdom forever.
The repression in andalusia was so hard that jews and Christians get away to Christians lands.
The Castile´s king Alfonso knew whats going to happened with his lands he calls for help to the Pope. The Castile´s army wasn´t prepared for such a big muslim army. When the muslim army was prepared he went to fight against Castile´s army.
The king Alfonso was afraid but he decided to fight at all cost.
This famous battle was called las Navas de Tolosa. When the Castile´s army was going to start the battle... The Aragon's king's army appeared on his left, the portuguese army on the right and at the last time the northern armies of navarra and leon appeared.
The combined Christians forces with around 70.000 soldiers against 200.000 muslim soldiers. In spite of the muslims superiority force and when Cristians infantery formation was going to break down the spanish three kings with his royal guard cavalry did it a suicide charge against muslim infantery. The charge was so powerfull that the muslims infantery formation broke and cavalry arrived to muslim army camp. When muslim prophet saw that they were going to crash his tent he took his horse and get away so fast that he left all his army. The muslim prophet never went back to spain.

Who is this mysterious prophet you idiot.
Good story though.
I thought the Caliphate of Cordoba disintegrated about the turn of the first millennium AD.
And the time frame were talking about here is the Renaissance era.
King Ferdinand and Isabella the start of the Catholic Monarchs.
Correct me if I'm wrong idiot.

When the fist calipha died. The new goverment was not very agressive. Why?? because it was controlled by a group of muslims with his own regions that the put a freedom regime of small regions.
This muslim prophet was in the Africa and the Calipha of Saudi Arabia ordered him to put order in Andalusia and destroy spanish kingdoms giving the absolute power.
The new calipha sent by Saudi Arabia was the fourth of Almohade Dinasty . The name was Muhammad An-Nasir Calipha his government was (1199-1213). It was a very conservative muslim. He arrived at andalusia in 1212. I called muslim prophet because it was radical muslim and he was a muslim fanatic.
King Fernando and Isabella destroyed the last muslim kingdom (Granada in 1492) and the last calipha that was Granada and the Calipha was Boabdil.

I reacll a story about a defeated muslim commander who held a quran while chained to several of his slaves that all had to be hacked to death in order for the knights to finally kill the commander.

Was this in Spain, or somewhere else?

In spain we don´t know what had happened to him when he arrived to Africa. But he only survived one year after the famous battle and his son succeeded a year later with only ten years of live. The muslim commander died in death-bed in marrakesh palace. Maybe, some muslims slaves kill him because he left all his army in the battlefield.
This was the last Calipha in andalusia and started the small kingdom of Granada.

Nobody expected in muslim africa that Muhammad An-Nasir had failed so dramatically in spain with so enormous army and furthermore, being a good commander. He died young and his son succeeded very young.

Some Muslims think Islam failed in Spain when Sunnie Muslims adopted "Taqiyyah" about start of 16century .
Taqiyyah is a judgement that is OK to lie in order to save your self.
Most Muslims did this that wanted to stay in their homes , normally it is a Shi'ia thing to save themselves from Sunni.
But when Sunni do it in Spain it didn't work out because Catholics check up on them that they eating pork and drinking wine, which of course they were, making Allah angry.
I don't believe that.
Allah give temptation to Catholics in particular and Protestants as well so His enactment of predestined trial of judgement set against the Jew could go ahead.
Which means He almost hates Catholics as much as He hates Jews.
