News reports that initial work has begun on the Nam Ngun-3 hydropower project in Laos are a stark reminder of Thailand's increasing reliance on its neighbours to satisfy its appetite for energy. via Inter Press Service

Cities and towns around the Num Ngum dam do not have electricity, but this is the biggest dam in southeast asia. The more dam got built, the more damage to agriculture and ecology system. Soon lao ppl will loose their farm lands. It's sad to see this is happening in our country. Highway 13 from xangkhaugn to the north was built by chinese and in return they took tons and tons of mine, coal, metal, other natural resource to China. Highway 1 to south was built by Japan, and in return they took tons and tons of goal and silvers from laos. LPDR is praising how well the foreigner came and help... what a joke.

i'm with you 100% when bashing at the govt, but will stand against you when you bashing about over lao ppl and our motherland. I was never a fan of commis, we left our country because of them, but about themkilling hmong children and women that might be in the past but not anymore.

Lao is a great country with a beautiful history in the past.

Only LPDR who run the show make it bad. So many Laotian suffer under their rules. LPDR feeding cheap and free energy to Thailand.

A series of dams proposed for the Nam Ngum River basin in Laos would have a serious impact on the livelihood of tens of thousands people due to huge areas being inundated and the blocking of fish migration routes, according to a social and environmental impact report.
The study, which considered three scenarios for hydropower and irrigation development, found the projects would block fish migration routes, destroy riverine habitat, and affect water quality.
Water quality in the existing Nam Ngum 1 reservoir would be significantly affected and key migration routes would be blocked by construction of Nam Ngum 2 and Nam Lik, according a summary of the report.

"The existing migration route to and from the Mekong River is the only remaining, unregulated connecting channel in the Nam Ngum Basin, and used by important species such as Pangasids and Cyprinids. The Nam Lik river supports a population of over 30,000 people, many of whom have a strong dependence on fisheries," it said.

"Subsistence farmers, the poor, the landless, ethnically and otherwise marginalised groups with few alternatives are likely to be hit hardest by any impact on habitats and wildcapture fisheries. The new reservoirs (Nam Ngum 2) are mainly expected to have moderate to low potential for reservoir fisheries," said the report, a copy of which was seen by The Nation.

Lao have a good population majority in southern and northern Lao. If Lao just produce all that Dam energy to the people of Lao. Maybe one day it will just be like New York and Tokyo. Instead giving cheap and free to Thailand energy hunger, China, Vietnam.

I do hated the commies Laos Gov't, LPDR the way they treat our peoples in Laos. They sold our land to foreigners peoples, all their projects is to feed the Thai peoples, what about our citizens??.. They getting poors each day goes by.
