Opinions anyone? Anyone been there recently? How is it there? I want to know everything all the good and bad. I really want to get to know everything about Laos. The past now and future. I should probably go read some books. Someone point me in the right direction.
I personally think there’s a lot of stuff they could do. I've never been there and am excited to go next year. My parents haven't been back since we moved to the US. Ah!!! I can't wait. Were also hitting up a few other countries like Australia, UK, Argentina etc.(the list is a lil long.) So I'm trying to be more globally aware.
I think I want to teach there for a couple years after I finish University. But I’m a lil scared ,because so many stories about how bad it is over there. The killing of the Hmong people. And the general racial hate towards other tribal people? The prostitution? Is it all true? My family have friends who are Hmong. Mien and so on. So I don’t really understand where all this hate is coming from. I’ve never seen it stateside. We all seem to get along here. Isn’t Laos suppose to be a Buddhists country? Where’s the peace and tranquility. If I got any of this wrong someone tell me.
How can we help our country grow is probably what I'm really asking? Mainly economically and socially, all while maintaining the environment and our cultural integrity? How can every person in Laos get along? Those of us who have grown up in the western side of the globe could but rather should help out. What actions do you think Laos needs to take to be succesful in the next 50 years?

(I wrote this on a whim so tell me if I need to clarify anything.)

Ame,
Where do you think Laos should be in 50 years? That is hard to say, but from what I read, Laos is trying hard to build good relationship with Internation countries (eg USA) and trying to rebuild their economy (slowly one step at a time).

One thing I must warn you is to never always believe what you hear/read about news coming from Hmong community in USA. I am not saying the news is right or wrong, but any info can easily be mis-interpret, 1/2 truths, exagerated, or downright lies. Hmongs in USA have their own hidden agenda and only broadcast certain news that beneficial to their goals/objectives. It is the best interest for Hmong in USA to bash Laos as a bad country so to make Pao looked like a freedom hero trying to help overthrown a bad gov't. So please, please don't trust anything you hear coming out of a Hmong's mouth. Maybe some of it is part truth, but don't let their opinions mislead you one way or another.

If you want more accurate info, you should visit/research info from UD Dept of Tourist, USA Dept of Education,..etc.

or asked people who have visit, vacation, or live there for more honest advices...

Even if a country is Buddism, does not mean a country should not fight or protect their national interest. Look at USA (christian country) and they send troops to fight constantly on foreign soil. This is just part of real life, no right or wrong answer here....

Laos, 50 years from NOW, hmmmmm I think it will improve back to the ICE AGE, where humans and animals live in harmony no more killings. Tigers, and lion will became vegetarian, while cows and deers will became carnivores!!!.... hahahahaaa...

Exactly what I was thinking. No offense to any hmong people...but they make it as if they were the only people from Laos that fought in the war. My dad was in it too, as many other Laos people were. Maybe genocide use to go on. But not to the extreme that alot of hmong people say. People all over the world have had bad things happen to them.

Ame,
WHAT YOU HAD SAID WAS EXECTLY MY POINT. EVERYONE SACRIFICED AND SUFFERERED DURING THE WAR. MOST (VIETS, LAOTIN, CAMBODIANS) LOST HUNDRED OF THOUSANDS OF MEN/FAMILIES FIGHTING AGAINST THE COMMUNIST. THE MONGS WERE MAINLY JUNGLE PPL HIRED/SETUP BY USA GOV'T (CIA) TO PICKUP DOWNED PILOTS AND TO SETUP AMBUSH AGAINST TO NORTHERN VIET TROOPS. THEIR ROLES WERE QUITE SIMPLE IN TERMS OF UTILIZING THEIR SKILLS RUNNING AROUND THE JUNGLE FOR THE PURPOSE USE. I AM SURE THE MONG TOO LOST A FEW THOUSANDS OF MEN (MAXIMUM).

BUT THE MONGS CONTINUE TO DRUMMED UP AND OVERSTATED/OVER EXXAGERATED/LIES ABOUT THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE WAR... EVERY OLD MEN WILL TELL LIES OF HAVING SERVE IN MILITARY, BUT IN FACT 90% OF THEM ARE PROBABLY JUST LYING SO THEY GET FREE BENEFITS IN USA.

Yeah, yeah. Your people surely suffered greatly by a damn war that they started on themselves. Boo-hoo. It would be very different if somebody, an outsider, came and wrong them. But for Viets, they never will have to worry about that. Damn Viet, why don’t you stop hiding your lies and start worrying about your own Southern Viets freedom fighters here in America instead. Stupid Viet only like to bark, that is all. Bark, bark, bark.

Some Laotians can hate Hmongs all they want. At least the Hmong never betrayed the Laos King. If anyone’s egg should be reveal, it should be those that are traitors. Yeah, yeah, whose telling ½ lies ½ truth now.

Laos is on its way to an invasion very soon, and they are so blind by and hungry for money at this time. The next 10 to 20 yrs, Laos will be turn upside down, downside up, left to right, right to left. Now Laos got AKs, Motorcycles, Airlines, new towns, new roads, new power plans, but soon will be a new country name. Laos only think under water, cause there are, fishes, crabs, and shrimps for them. THINK OUTSIDE PADeK.

Here are some info from the Wikitravels:

"According to Wikitravel's Luang Prabang page, the problem got so bad that the senior monks threatened to stop the morning procession altogether. They relented when the government threatened to continue the procession using laypeople dressed as monks if the monks refused to go along."

This sounds absurd, not to mention that it disparages the local population by insinuating that they would offend the tenents of their faith by going along with the gov't. I've traveled throughout Southeast Asia and written extensively about it and without proper sourcing this sounds misleading at best.

Do you have any other souces apart from Wikitravel? And what are their sources? Where is their attribution for this claim?

Suggestions like these are designed to disparage a brutal gov't, but in fact end up belittling the local populace. The Lao gov't doesn't need any help - the truth is enough.
