SACRAMENTO -- A resolution sought by an Oroville couple to support stricken Hmong refugees in Laos was unanimously endorsed by a state Assembly committee Tuesday.
In an address to the Judiciary Committee, Georgie Szendrey told of witnessing mass starvation and men, women and children suffering from bullet and shrapnel wounds when she and her husband helped to facilitate the surrender of nearly 200 of the frightened refugees from one jungle encampment in Laos two years ago.

After hearing similar statements from four other speakers, three of them Hmong, the 10-member committee unanimously passed the resolution to the full Assembly that calls on the U.S. government to intercede to aid the Laotian refugees.

Afterwards, several assemblyman and state senators expressed their support for the refugees to a noontime crowd of about 400 mostly Hmong residents during a rally on the steps of the state Capitol.

Edward Szendrey, a retired chief investigator in the Butte County District Attorney's Office, called it a "big step" in the Oroville couple's quest to assist the refugees.

The pair claim that Hmong families are being hunted down and killed by communist forces in Laos because they or their relatives fought on the side of the U.S. during the Vietnam War.

The Szendreys and Hmong residents in Oroville and elsewhere have been working behind the scenes for nearly seven years to try to get the U.S. government to help the Laotian refugees.

The Oroville couple's

arrest inside the communist country in 2005 attracted widespread media attention to the problem.
The resolution passed Tuesday calls on the Bush Administration and Congress to encourage the Laotian government to curb civil rights violations in that country, while providing access to food and medical care to the estimated 5,000 refugees in hiding.

It also asks that an independent third-party be brought in to monitor the safe surrender of those who wish to remain in Laos, while providing refugee-status to those who want to leave the country.

"We've come along way from the days when the government even refused to acknowledge these people exist," Szendrey said following Tuesday's legislative hearing.
