Blacks from Africa as America's true model minority?

DO African immigrants make the smartest Americans? The question may sound outlandish, but if you were judging by statistics alone, you could find plenty of evidence to back it up.

This definitely fits what I saw while getting my bachelor's, master's, and PhD. I've always felt it was a spectacular bit of racism that Asians are so lauded for supposedly being America's model minority when it's clear to anyone with eyes that Africans are far more accomplished. In my own family, and I know this is true of other white people, people are more comfortable thinking well of Asians than thinking well of blacks.

Honestly, Asians ARE the best example of being today's U.S. immigrants. They are far more intelligent, less crime, own more businesses than ever, and when they bring their Asian culture to the states....it's like a fresh breath of air. They are some of the nicest immigrants too. Just about ANY other group of people can adapt to their style of clothing, morality, and certainly their foods. I don't eat African foods, sorry. Don't feel bad though because I don't particularly care for Central American foods either. This is coming from an African American female so this should mean A LOT to some of you.

sometimes Albanians and Romanians have a unique hospitality too. there's alot of em here and i worked with alot. but only sometimes, like anybody they can have their fair share of bad apples too.

Asians kiss the whitemans ass and we all know that. How do u think the white man got so powerful. They manipulated those little asian men for thier gun powder. I`m a Nigerin-afro/Brazilian brotha born in the U.S. In Nigeria thier education system is identical to that of old school englang in which most of the kids attend boarding schools and recieve ass whupings in class if they act up. plus they come from nothing and they see an opportunity in america as blessing while African Americans are use to what America has to offer and it`s more easily obtainable for them therfourth the maximum effort is not put in for a better life as a whole and the same would apply for europeans coming to America.

I think alot of that has to do with the fact that people are more willing to deal with and respect asians, for the very reasons you have stated, whether they are true or not. I do agree that many asians are respectable people, but the intelligence factor is relative because of there intense educational system which we don't have. And now the African and Caribbean immigrants are coming over with more college degrees than any other minority group so it only shows me that pthe perception is there. Asians are treated as smart and assumed to be smart by many, but only in certain ways. It is a form or prejudice, but with a positive spin, unless you are asian and don't fit into the stereotype. Somewhat like a tall physically fit black person who sucks at athletics gets sidelined (or the sh!t end of the stick).

Please forgive me Kelvyn....my comeback is the fact that there are probably MORE AAs who kiss the a33 of these people in America than any other group. Why do I say this? Look at sports....they are used as pawn basically to "entertain" them (Caucasians). These athletes kiss these people butts every chance they get for a bit of extra cash in their pockets while half of them aren't even holding a degree in higher education because they've decided to, I'm guessing, go straight into the sports arena without ever thinking of a backup plan if that ever fails. There are just as many "black" butt kissers as there are Asian ones.

I guess where there is very little opportunity in their homelands, they seek out N. America with that soul purpose. I guess that can a play a factor in so many of them already coming over and obtaining degrees more than any other minority group. I could be wrong though. I do believe that Asians are perceived, also, as the "good" immigrants because they are more willing to assimilate than any other group, in my opinion. I don't know, but with the racial tensions in America I don't think many foreigners looking for citizenship find safety in numbers amongst people of similar nationationalities. Asians in NY do not really assimilate too well. You have a Korean town, a Chinatown, little Tokyo, it's very segregated.

I do agree that Africans are truly the new model minorities in America and it shows in graduation rates, securing advanced degrees, and of course holding top hobs in law, engineering, business, computers and anything you can think of. I am Africa but also an Amercian citizen, 25 years old in doctoral school for public policy at Woodrow Wilson College at Princeton,,,in my class there are more foreign African students than even Asians,,so I just think people need to accept the facts and move on. I went to a predominantly African American undergrad and grad school and boy the graduation rate was less that 25%!!! Africans are hardworkers,,not to say that Asians, African Americans and White Americas aren't. We just realize our situation and trt to make our futures better unlike Black American who are still waiting ir Mana from heave. It's all about focus, hard work, and relentless determination. I know over 50 African doing better than the thousands of Balck Americans there are.

So I think people just need to acknowledge the facts and give credit where it's due. sians have been the model minority,,but they clearly come in second,,especially after Cho and Virginia Tech. Some cultural sensitivity training is necessary,,,even on this blog.

It's good that Africans are the next model minority in America for a change since Asians held on to the title for so long. I've noticed in my county that lots of Ethiopians run gas stations, 7-11's, restaurants and hair stores. Actually I'm proud of them and prefer to patronize their stores over those Koreans, Hindus and Pakistanis. Not only that, but these Ethiopians help make our predominatly black Prince Georges County even more rich as well. These people are driven by their past failures an unavialable oppurtunities in their own respective countries to become successful. However, I hope this doesn't flare up our crab mentality still prevalent in our society though.

Oh really. LOL. How many Athlete superstars do you and i know or even heard of Kissing ass. Not me. You know what they go through, the eyeball test which means if you look like a top notch athlete the rest of the world kisses your butt to get closer to the future dough. How do i know? I was that football recruit in high school, so was my older brother and my sister is top 3 in the LA city high schools for high jump, so i know about who kisses ass in the athletic field.(we can foot race all day) Ok, you probably aint feeling me yet. It`s simple. If you come from a Non-Western country all they see is black men and women as entertainers and whites as running the show, so when a foriegner comes to the US alot of them already know of the slave history so the feel that we are beneath them but they feel beneath the White Americans, so they react in a way as for them to move up they have to get closer to the Whites be any legal means possible. Black folks don`t have to in America cuz we already know the game.

SIR &#65533; I wish to express solidarity with the Zimbabwean people. Though many people in the West and elsewhere are unanimous in their condemnation of Robert Mugabe, Africans and other Black people do not necessarily share their views.

Racism might be central in the economic isolation of Zimbabwe, leading to inflation and hardship in that country. In Zimbabwe, the European settlers racialised the majority Africans, drove them from their ancestral land, and made them into squatters.

Even dogs were allowed to take seats in the Rhodesians&#65533; cars, but not their African servants!

Moreover, the confiscation of land in Zimbabwe went on for a long time, starting with the pioneer column of the colonialists, some of who needed a tropical climate to recover from their tuberculosis.

Among other violations, the British continued to resettle their war veterans in Zimbabwe after the World War II, and recklessly confiscated the communally-owned African land, without any compensation.

The British pensioners were also encouraged to resettle in the then Southern Rhodesia, where the Colonial government protected the invaders in their use of violence against the Africans.

The Africans were then herded into reserves and drier areas, with marginal rainfall after being deprived of their land, where for a long time, they had grown their own crops and grazed their cattle.

The confiscation of African land continued up to the mid-1970s without any compensation from the British government. Furthermore, people of British origin continued to settle in Zimbabwe, even after rebel Ian Smith grabbed power and declared his infamous &#65533;Unilateral Declaration of Independence&#65533; in 1965.

Because of all of the above, I am of the view that it would be difficult to convince, not only Africans, but also their leaders, to desist from expressing solidarity with the Zimbabwean people. By expressing solidarity with Zimbabweans, Africans are resisting racism as a legacy of colonialism.
