The U.S. led Russia, Germany, France and China in deliveries from 2008 to 2012, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said in a report today. Global exports rose 17 percent from the five-year period ended 2007, as China’s foreign sales of major conventional weapons surged 162 percent.

Bit of hypocrisy on our part.

Considering this:

June 18, 1987

Businesses or governments in at least 26 countries have sold weapons to both sides in the Iran-Iraq War, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said in its annual report Wednesday.

The report said that since the last Iran-Iraq War survey two years ago, 17 countries joined the list of those selling weapons to both sides, including Sweden, Britain, South Africa and the Netherlands. The United States and the Soviet Union were among those on the 1984 list.

"Weapons systems like the S-300, he said,“would simply set the right conditions” for negotiating Assad’s departure. On May 7, Kerry and Putin agreed to begin those negotiations at an international summit in the coming weeks.“To put it simply, the S-300 will put a damper on any desire to attack Syria from the air if that is the real intention of our partners” heading into these negotiations."

LOL

Putin doesn't trust us.

And rightly so.

It all goes back to that famous saying attributed to Reagan that he borrowed from an old Russian proverb: "trust but verify".

"The phrase was learned by Reagan from Suzanne Massie, a writer on Russia. She told Reagan, "The Russians like to talk in proverbs. It would be nice of you to know a few. You are an actor – you can learn them very quickly". The original Russian proverb is a short rhyme which states:(doveryai, no proveryai)."

Go figure.

It's all about Tartus in Syria, a port by the sea that the Russkies built on the days of Assad Sr.
This is the only base the Russkies have in the Mediterranean to support their navy (including nuclear subs) in the Mediterranean and beyond.
Putin's nightmare is ...'wrong' folks getting the reign in Damascus and kicking him out of Tartus.
If Putin loses Tartus, Russia gets in deep shit military speaking. His military arm retracts behind the Bosphorus Strait, where his navy vessels can be vulnerable and under tight surveillance every time they cross it back and forward.
Despite all you read on the media, included Topix, Putin is on a tight suite and can't move free ... unless he goes overboard and declares openly that he will hit us or anyone that messes with Assad. He hasn't done it ... and now you know his limitations and soft spots.
.
Russia can flatten the entire world in 20 minutes!! All Putin has to say is.. "Back off!" He obviously has been heard very well.

He scares the hell out of the entire West! Putin is definitely not the kind of guy you play with. He has an agenda for Russia, as well as for himself.

On a military weapon point of view (something that influences politics greatly), it is very interesting. We will finally know if those 300 missile systems can or can not effectively shoot down generation 5 airplanes from the skies. Will the US/Israel sends air planes and see them crash? Or will they display their continuous military power and keep their planes intact while bombarding? Or will they simply avoid further airstrikes to not reveal the truth?

Selling arms to a country does not ensure victory to the butcher, it does however give more weapons to the Rebels as these dummies need cash so the soldiers of the SAA give tips to the Rebels as to the location of the weapons and the Rebels give them food and cash. Assad is a dummy and no clue how to keep loyalty in his troops.

and Israel has already gave notice to Assad and Syria that a few more attacks are eminante. These guys think that the weapons have no signature to follow and Russia laughing so is Iran because they get paid whether the bombs make it or not.

You really need to do some studying on the new Russia and its capabilities, just look at the mear size difference to the Soviet Union days and army size, the only thing that grew is the weapons manufacturing and that is what it is all about, selling guns and oil nothing more. That and the veto at the UN are Russia's only weapons left. There country has become so corrupt that he would have the same difficulty with loyalty as Assad has, China the same, although the new leader in China is making some positive moves to give the people a better life and try to work on the down turning economy.

Yep
Lots of fireworks coming up with Hezbollah now knee deep in the quagmire and tons of Russian weapons pouring into the Assad/Hezbollah axis.
