Dear Joel, please control your attraction to me. I know that my magnetism is great but please try and control your lustful desires.

Much love, sweet Hugh.

No.

My concerns revolve around racial hatred, murder and the ability of some races to get away with murder of "blacks" in the 21st century in America, the land of equality and freedom.

If I were stalked in Jamaica by anyone like TM was I would believe that the stalker was an ill-wisher and I would seek to defend myself. What would you do, if you were in his position?

Why did the stalker persist to pursue TM although the police told him to desist with the pursuit? I speak from memory.

Equality? No 2 things in the universe are exactly equal though similarities may exist.

By equality, I think you mean equality before the law and/or equal opportunities for all irrespective of race, religion, gender and socio-economic status.

The media is cunningly publishing a pic of Travyon when he was 12 years or so that shows him an an innocent lad, while at the time he was shot he was 16 and a heavily built 6 footer adorned with gangster paraphernalia. He was a criminal and I believe by some accounts a drug dealer and a hit killer. He deserved what he got when he tried to bring the law of the jungle into civil society. Karma caught up with him.

NATURE GIVES BACK:

AVIRAM ROZIN (Founder of Sadhana Forest, Auroville, India): "If you work with nature, nature gives you back in terms of happiness, peace, relationships with family and friends improve..."

JOEL: Subjective experience. Millions of farmers, horticulturists and environmentalists work with nature in the fields of agriculture, afforestation, bunding and the like and they are far from being happy nor are they at peace. Many impoverished farmers in poor countries who're heavily in debt commit suicide. Others living in poor and rich nations face family discord and fail where nurturing in relationships is concerned. Nature gives back in terms of produce if one works efficiently, this could bring prosperity and happiness of a surface material kind follows. The inner happiness and peace that Dr Rozin refers to is a yogic kind of symbiosis that takes place when one unites in consciousness and force with their universal equivalents as manifested in trees, soil, water and air. Rozin has perhaps merged to an extent with nature in this yogic way considering the fact that he, an Israeli national living with wife and 2 kids in Auroville, is a follower of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. Aviram Rozin once spoke of bringing more consciousness into matter through his afforestation and water conservation project. So, some effect of the integral yoga could have manifested in his life. Once the consciousness and energy field of the individual gets activated, albeit feebly, it's easy to unite with the sentience and force of nature.....

WHERE THE MIND IS WITHOUT FEAR:

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high

Where knowledge is free

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments

By narrow domestic walls

Where words come out from the depth of truth

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way

Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit

Where the mind is led forward by thee

Into ever-widening thought and action

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

Rabindranath Tagore

..........

ADDENDUM:

Where the Mind is without Fear was written by Rabindranath Tagore - Greatest writer in modern Indian literature, Bengali poet, novelist, educator, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Tagore was awarded the knighthood in 1915, but he surrendered it in 1919 as a protest against the Massacre of Amritsar, where British troops killed some 400 Indian demonstrators protesting colonial laws. Tagore's reputation in the West as a mystic has perhaps mislead his Western readers to ignore his role as a reformer and critic of colonialism.

JOEL: I had recited this poem in grade 9 at a school gathering to celebrate Independence Day.

OUR CASUARINA TREE:

By Toru Dutt

(Taught in Grade 7, English class, in Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai)

LIKE a huge Python, winding round and round

The rugged trunk, indented deep with scars,

Up to its very summit near the stars,

A creeper climbs, in whose embraces bound

No other tree could live. But gallantly

The giant wears the scarf, and flowers are hung

In crimson clusters all the boughs among,

Whereon all day are gathered bird and bee;

And oft at nights the garden overflows

With one sweet song that seems to have no close,

Sung darkling from our tree, while men repose.

When first my casement is wide open thrown

At dawn, my eyes delighted on it rest;

Sometimes, and most in winter,—on its crest

A gray baboon sits statue-like alone

Watching the sunrise; while on lower boughs

His puny offspring leap about and play;

And far and near kokilas hail the day;

And to their pastures wend our sleepy cows;

And in the shadow, on the broad tank cast

By that hoar tree, so beautiful and vast,

The water-lilies spring, like snow enmassed.

But not because of its magnificence

Dear is the Casuarina to my soul:

Beneath it we have played; though years may roll,

O sweet companions, loved with love intense,

For your sakes, shall the tree be ever dear.

Blent with your images, it shall arise

In memory, till the hot tears blind mine eyes!

What is that dirge-like murmur that I hear

Like the sea breaking on a shingle-beach?

It is the tree’s lament, an eerie speech,

That haply to the unknown land may reach.

Unknown, yet well-known to the eye of faith!

Ah, I have heard that wail far, far away

In distant lands, by many a sheltered bay,

When slumbered in his cave the water-wraith

And the waves gently kissed the classic shore

Of France or Italy, beneath the moon,

When earth lay trancèd in a dreamless swoon:

And every time the music rose,—before

Mine inner vision rose a form sublime,

Thy form, O Tree, as in my happy prime

I saw thee, in my own loved native clime.

Therefore I fain would consecrate a lay

Unto thy honor, Tree, beloved of those

Who now in blessed sleep for aye repose,—

Dearer than life to me, alas, were they!

Mayst thou be numbered when my days are done

With deathless trees—like those in Borrowdale,

Under whose awful branches lingered pale

“Fear, trembling Hope, and Death, the skeleton,

And Time the shadow;” and though weak the verse

That would thy beauty fain, oh, fain rehearse,

May Love defend thee from Oblivion’s curse.

It all goes back to the bigoted perception that if a black man is wearing a hoodie, it is scary, but if a white guy like me is wearing one, then everything is ok.
