U.S. hopes of reviving Mideast peace talks appeared shaky Saturday after a senior Palestinian official said the Palestinians are unlikely to resume negotiations if Israel does not halt Jewish settlement building.

This is really an amazing standoff. What is incredible about it is the amount of time that it has gone on. It is 60 years since the founding of the state of Israel. It is 40 years since the 1967 war. After all of this time, the idea that there will be any resolution should be seen as the unlikely event that it is. What on earth are the circumstances under which the current situation would change? It is not the settlements that are the problem. It is the Palestinians being on the occupied territories. That won't change, so nothing will change.
