Sri Lanka slams US-led sanctions on Iran

A high-ranking Sri Lankan official has criticized the US-engineered sanctions against Iran, saying the measure has adversely affected the lives of people in his island nation.

During a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Colombo Mohammad-Nabi Hassanipour on Thursday, Sri Lanka's Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka pointed out that as many as 1,000 rural electricity projects have been put on hold due to the inaccessibility of financing from Tehran.

“US sanctions against Iran are infringing on the basic rights of our people. Iran has a right to proceed with its nuclear program with peaceful intentions to meet its domestic needs. This is something that 45 other countries are also doing and is a right of Iran,” he pointed out.

Adding to Sri Lankan frustration is that it has no oil reserves of its own and relies heavily on imports of Iranian oil.

Before US-led sanctions on Tehran, Sri Lanka imported as much as 90 percent of its oil from Iran and refined it at a plant funded by the Islamic Republic.

The South Asian country's only oil refinery works best with Iranian light crude.

Meanwhile, Colombo is unable to receive payment of approximately USD25 million in lieu of tea sent to Iran due to sanctions that went into effect last June.
