2 divisive figures enter Iran's presidential race

A pair of powerful and divisive figures registered Saturday to run in Iran's presidential election, providing a jolt to the political scene a month ahead of the vote.
With respect, I thought that the ayatollah Ali Khamenei was the one who runs the government in Iran. Why do they need a president? Isn't Khamenei like the supreme leader. Not to insult anyone just curious.
