The hapless Greeks have managed to keep themselves off the front pages for a few months as they burn through their latest cash infusion, courtesy of the German taxpayer.

Widespread misery and despair are breeding lawlessness and violence. The sense that the country is falling apart is emboldening fringe political parties on both left and right to spew apocalyptic rhetoric, as they inexorably move to fill the vacuum left by Greece's discredited and collapsing center.

Read through the stories appearing everyday in the Greek press (which you might only find buried on the back pages of American newspapers) and you will undoubtedly ask yourself: "How long will these proud people put up with such degradation?"

The Greece exposure of the euro zone’s public sector has risen, reflecting the huge sums lent to the country in the form of bailout loans for the government and cash for banks via the euro zone’s central banking system.

The IMF doesn’t mention this, but Greece defaulting on money lent by the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), the euro zone’s temporary bailout fund, would have only a small impact on member state debt burdens.

That’s because Eurostat, the EU statistics agency, ruled in 2011 that each government backing the EFSF must register its share of loans made by the EFSF as government debts when the loans are made. The same is true of the bilateral loans made to Greece under the country’s first bailout.

So almost all the damage to government debt levels done by outstanding bailout loans to Greece has already been done...

The Greek debt restructuring and economic meltdown has hit the banks hard; Cypriot austerity in 2013 will deepen their problems.

It will render FALSE the euro zone's pledge that "Grease" is a "unique case".

Restructuring the banks is also troublesome, as they are predominantly deposit-funded. That raises a political problem: deposits worth 130% of GDP are from nonresidents, mainly RUSSIA and EASTERN EUROPE
