Cleveland leads U.S. in losing residents

CLEVELAND: Hurt by manufacturing job losses, Cleveland had the largest population decline among the nation's big cities in the past year and the second-worst percentage drop since 2000, trailing only Hurricane ...

Big cities loosing population; why are we surprised when people leave high crime, high prices, lack of jobs, inadequate public services, pollution, noise, crowds, poor educational opportunities for the children, corruption, public officials who are more intent on self service, unsafe housing? Why does anyone stay?

The only reason people stay is if they have no other option... or the mayor just forces them to

The people that stay behind, in the inner city, are the slop of society. Would you walk in downtown cleveland or akron late at night?

Why would you - there's nothing to do anyway.

Nothing to do?

Between the muggers, krack horz, homeless, and illegal after hours hangouts, there's PLENTY to do in downtown Akron late at night.

Well, depends on what part of Cleveland, cause I'd love to live in a few parts of Cleveland Heights, as there is a nice explosion of culture going on that way, but other than that, I don't blame anyone for leaving. Bad economy, and the weather just sucks here. These days it actually pays to just get your stuff and leave with the warmer weather out west and better job opportunities.

Cleveland has many problems. If you watch the news too much, you would be scared to leave your house. I don't blame people for leaving Cleveland and the state of Ohio.

Funny how they pick the weirdest things to censor, but yet you can call a white guy just about anything and they let that fly.

I have lived outside the US for some time . More specifically in a so called third world country. Believe when I say that the similarities between Ohio and third world countries are many: high crime rate, few good-paying jobs, bad or no schools, poverty, corruption of public leaders, etc. Just like the africans are leaving Africa for Europe, Ohioan are leaving Ohio for other, more prosperous states. The reasons behind the outmigration are the same. They are looking for a better life, period. Ohio cannot provide it. That simple. The only way to reverse this trend is to put new blood in leadership positions starting with mayors, governor and so on. You need young people in those positions. People that understand how the world moves these days and are not stuck with ideas from the good old 50s, 60s and 70s. Experience based on ideas from the old times is worthless these days. The world and society has moved on.

''Perhaps in the not too distant future, people are going to be leaving arid areas of this country, the New Mexicos and the Arizonas,'' he said.''They'll come running back to Ohio, because we have water, and they're going to be thirsty.''

I doubt I'll be running back to Ohio anytime soon. Why go to a state with incredibly poor infrastructure, high taxes and no jobs? You may have water, but you can't get it to the homes and businesses! And just what do you do with your waste water...oh that's right, just flush it into the mighty Cuyahoga River. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Glad I left 25 years ago.

I tried for over a year to sell my house and couldn't. It's simply not worth what I can afford to lose on it. If I could have, I'd be gone. When I can sell it, I'll most likely be gone.

As for Strickland's comments, REALLY?! What are you basing this prediction on, Governor? I don't know if you know this or not, but they have water in NM and AZ. They're not out there with sticks looking for wells to dig. And is that your plan for Ohio? To hope people get thirsty living in the desert? Even if they did, what would make them come HERE? Ohio isn't the only state with water.

And this is why we are where we are. This state's leadership....well, there isn't any state leadership. We get one yahoo after another in office so they can work on a gun law or something else that does NOTHING to help this state's economics. WE'RE FREAKING SURROUNDED BY WATER!!! How can you NOT make that work, especially now that oil prices are so high? Stop waiting for the federal government to help us. Let's help ourselves!!! Let's quit worrying about being a red or blue state and elect capable people who can and want to do the right thing! Of course, we need those types of people to run for office in the first place.

If we paid HALF of the attention to state politics as we do to who is going to be the second-string right-side tackle for the Cleveland Browns, we may actually make something out of this god-forsaken sh1thole.

Having plenty of water doesn't absolve Ohio and the states around it of their economic sins.

That's the truth.

You HAVE TO FIX what's wrong...and that means the issues with regard to poor demographics, organized labor, business culture and education must be addressed. They will not fix themselves.

Either that, or the place will descend into such a state of disrepair that no one will ever be able to do anything with it again.

Ohio has tons of potential but there are certain elements controlling the state's politics (entrenched organized labor, too many blue collar old folks) who don't want change. Until those elements are neutralized, nothing good will happen there.

Panzers would do the trick. Battle of the Bulge style. Ah, I can hear the troops singing the Panzerlied...

i left akron three years ago for cincinnati. the nasty natti. lives up to it;s name. all of you happy campers should apprciate what you have. housing prices are not to bad, and akron has the lowest crime rate of any city its size in ohio. nobody on these pages likes to hear it but mayor don has run a pretty tight ship. it's really easy to talk trash about your home town, i guess, for some people but, hell it's got a lot to offer. and if you gave me choice between cleveland and cincinnati i guess i would pick the place where i found the best looking youger woman
