The Falkland Islands were named after the treasurer of the British navy. Pepys Island was named after the secretary to the Admiralty, then Cook renamed it South Georgia after George III. The Sandwich Islands were named after the first Lord of the Admiralty. The "South" was later added to distinguish them from the Hawaiian Islands which were, at the time, briefly known as the Sandwich Islands.
Why not restore the original names? "South Georgia" is confused in most of the world's mind as part of a US state. "South" in South Sandwich Islands is redundant, no longer relevant and wasn't in the original name. In honour of the navy's role in liberating all the islands in 1982, I would propose retaining the name "Falkland Islands" but renaming South Georgia and the South Sanwich Islands as Pepys Island and the Sandwich Islands, respectively. All three territiories would thus be named after forefathers of the British navy. |

Folks, Peeps and Sandwich? Is this a picnic?

Yes

I think jmNZ's suggestion is sound. If I am not mistaken, the Falklands' first British settlement, at Port Egmont, is also named for a navy figure.

Yea, but no forgot that islands are argentinians.

So you claim Pepys I. and the Sandwich Is. are Argentine? Antoine de la Roche, a London merchant, discovered Pepys I. in 1675. The great English navigator, James Cook, discovered the Sandwich Is. in 1775, excepting the northernmost two islands. These were discovered by the Russian captain, Fabian von Bellingshausen, in 1819. British sovereignty was proclaimed over the Falkland Is in 1766, Pepys I. in 1843 and the Sandwich Is. in 1908. How does this history make them Argentine? |

The islands were under Argentine sovereignty during Independence, soon usurped them to us.

Argentina thinks it owns part of Antarctica as well. I hope they never get disabused of that notion by force.

Don't worry son. The Antharctic territories and The South Atlantic Ocean is ours. All the planet know it.
END. |

If by "yours" you mean you can color in a map, have at it. If by "yours" you mean you can control who goes there and does what there you are doing nothing but wishful thinking, son. Argentina doesn't have the means to back that up.

By the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, all claims south of 60S are "frozen".
Both the UK and the Argentine are signatories. |
