Islam in Nineteenth-Century Wallo, Ethiopia: Revival, Reform and Reaction
By Hussein Ahmed
Commerce and Islam:
Abir has suggested four important factors for the emergence of Tajura and the revival of commerce in the 19th century, among these were:
1) The expansion of the Red Sea trade after the establishment of Egypt power in the Hijaz and the increase in the demand for slaves from Ethiopia.
2) The rise and expansion of the kingdom of Shawa route.
3) The decline of Zeila-Harar and Shawa route.
4) The opening of a new route to Shawa through the salt-producing Afar territory.
• If the rise of shawa can be regarded as a contributory factor, so can the rise and the development of the principality of Qa’llu in eastern Wallo, which had a more direct access to Awsa and Tajura than did Shawa, Without the patronage support of the Q’allu rulers and their vassals in Reqqe’ and Daway, the volume of trade would have been limited [or curtailed]…. Later on, however ( with the initial resistance to conversion) it was the Oromo ‘ulama’ of Dawway who were responsible for the through Islamization of some of the neighbouring Afara nomadic groups of the low land.….this is just synopsis of history in the region as pertained to Wallo and Oromos !

Note that in my earlier expose, perhaps only of its kind, I have described the similarities, indeed the the sameness of Awi/Agew and Omotic dances. The above vic clip is another good example. Awi/Agew being kushitic now, they differ fro Oromo, Beja or othe cushitic dances. It's possible Awi/Agew were originally Omotoc groups who retained their dance form while adopting Kushitc language. Remember, theere existed Omotic speaking group in Amara Sayint, who are creditted to being the originators the first Amharic creole.

Guji Oromos, on the south of Ethiopia, Adola and Kebre-mengist area, may well have been Omotic speakers before adopting Oromo language. They have still mainatained their Omotic dance forms as Awis, Hammer, Dorze, Welaita, etc.
