some contradictory indications regarding Eritrea, despite the fact that ILGA
(source La Seminaire Gai) list the status of homosexuality in Eritrea as being
legal, two gay men are known to have been granted asylum in 1995 by the US
(IGLHRC AP). Eritrea appears to have no sodomy laws.
23.02 The International Lesbian and Gay Association website states, as of 28 July
2006, that same-sex sexual activity is legal for men and women in Eritrea,
though the association does note that much of the information is out of date.

You should be ashamed of yourself. it's not funny to use someone elses suffering just to poke fun at someone. That poor old man should have nothing but your deepest sympathies.

As for the notion that homosexuality is allowed in eritrea, I would challenge you to go proove that. Go there, kiss another man in public, and see how long it is before you end up in prison.

Have you been to Eritrea?

I doubt you have because you clearly don't know the culture or the society.

Then for sure you are suggesting that there is homosexuality. I don't think there is any surprise in that

No I have not. I also haven't been to Morocco, but I have a hunch that it's not legal there either. If it actually is legal, if gays are actually allowed to be gay with out fear of reprisal from authorities, I would say that It's a good, progressive thing for eritrea. if not, I wouldn't fault them since everyone else in the region is unwilling to extend those rights. What is the actual legal status of gays in eritrea?

It is not illegal. The society doesn't know or even comprehend what is "gay" or "homosexual". There are not even words to call it. Most, if they know what it is call it by using words from Ethiopian Amharic "finfanit" or Arabic "looti".
If you see men holding hands in Eritrea, or hugging each other, to westerners it would seem "gay" but to the people it wouldn't be seen as wrong.

Now you might say "well how about if two men or women kiss"...the thing about public displays of affection ie kissing or anything that is sexual is that it is frowned upon because it is considered a private matter.

In the US, if two men hold hands and walk down the street, they might get assaulted by some homophobe, thats not the case in Eritrea.

by the way, the word "finfanit" in Amharic means "disgusting or nasty or gross"

it's equivalent to the "F"-word for "gays"

I'm curious to know more. Would that mean that a hetero sexual couple would be frowned upon for kissing or holding hands in public? Would that also mean that a suspected gay couple would not be tracked down and caught in the act, as once was the case in the US

Homosexuality is not legal in Eritrea. In fact, it is a punishable crime. You can get up to three years in prison for homosexual conduct, according to the Eritrean penal code.

For more info about gay Eritreans, you can check out: http://queeritrea.blogspot.com/

Oh, how come it is legal? I am gay Eritrean who struggled my way in Asmara. I had my friend and all our movements was secret below tunnels only. You will be in prison for years for being gay, but that is if only someone saw you go to the prison or otherwise you will be killed unnoticed by the goverment. You will desappear unknown out of this world.
Ya hetro people can never kiss in the streets as it is shame by the culture. We really have bad culture. For your surprise before a decade or so, our mother's couldn't mention their husbands name otherwise it is insult. Even they can't walk on their side, the man walkis first and the woman follows him. But now this is changing a lot though you still see it in the rural areas. Poor Eritrean women.

Did you idiots know that eritrea has no such word for gay people. We call gay people luttie and that's not even an eritrean language. How can a country that doesnt even have a word for homosexuals let gay people live let alone make it legal lolol no western country can have influence in eritrea unlike ethiopia who is getting a threat to legalize homosexuality in ethiopia or lose aid support lololol didn't we have an open proud gay ethiopian just recently lololol
Ain't nothing free, food aid comes with strings attached...military aid comes with sending you to war with somalia.
Eritrea says thank you but no thank you, they hate self reliant countries they cant control so they sanction us. Lolol toothless sanction by hypocrite western countries lolol who f they think they are to play morally correct when they built their wealth on raping africa, enslaving them and killing off the native americans lol happy late 4th of you...what a mockery of justice.
