In a few months, I am getting two new sisters from Addis. One of them is named Etagegnehu, and I already know the meaning of her name. But the other's is Nasifaye, and I have had more trouble finding something about her name. Can anyone help? Also, we've been guessing on the spelling, so any advice there would be welcome as well.

Thanks!

Wow! This is a GREAT community. The knowledge here with helping people find the meanings of these names is phenomenal!

My wife and I are thinking of naming our son "Aksum" or "Axum". We have reasearched the history of the city of Axum, but we cannot find the actual meaning of the name.

Does anyone know the meaning of the name "Aksum"?

Geta means lord. Getachew means the lord of many. Its put as one is talking, you being a "geta" of a group of ppl.
Getinet means Lordship.
Getahun means lordshiip be upon you.
Getaye means My lord
Getiye means My lord (only for a loved one or a child. Has nothing to do with being Geta but expression of love.)

Nebiy means prophet like Nebiy Daniel,
Nebiyu means the prophet
Nebiyat is plural of Nebniy, used for both boys and girls.

Correct me if I am wrong folks.

Whew, good luck on this one. Axum is so mystical to Ethiopians we left it at that. I love to know too.

I think its a biblical name like Yohannes, Yosef, Yesus etc... Ethiopians specially the northern Christians use thousands of names from the bible the Ethiopian coptic version. Some biblical names are Hebrew as a direct adaptation, others are Ge'ez, Like GebreSelassie, HaileSelassie, Menbere Tsebaot,
Haile Melekot, etc...

Thanks a lot.

Let me try. "Se'w" means man in the sense of human kind, or it could mean a person with no gender designation.
Alem means world. Litrally sewalem means the world of mankind.
However Ethiopians use the word "Alem" to express happiness, satisfaction, being content. There are names such as Alemie, Alemu. So "se'w-Alem"
Also Se'w is used as a name in "Se'winet" to express admiration.
So "se'w Alem" is a beautiful twist of these names. Its an expressive name of love to say "you are my happiness"
Best I could do. Others could have addition or better expression to it. Or corrections.

Maybe some of you knows the meaning of amharic name Wolde?

Wold in Ge'ez means child. I think. So Wolde means "my child" I could be wrong. There are names like Wolde-Tensay, Welde-Semayat, Welde-Yohannes. Your name is a short to one of these and many many others I did not list of course. I have no Idea how "Welde"
is used here. If we can figure this out you have the meaning of your name. I think this is very easy for those who are close to Ge'ez or the Tewahdo church.

You may have to take a trip at a moment's notice, so don't let the unexpected jangle your nerves. Look at the day as an adventure, and welcome unexpected twists and turns.
