Migrations occurred everywhere, but the continent of Africa belongs to black people. That is the truth, and I don't care about how many people came there from Yemen, Europe, etc.
If you go back in history you will find black people in the family tree. That tells you where you come from and who you are.
It does seem biased, but there is a lot of validity in what black people say. Africa is different ethnic groups of black people-- whether they choose to believe it or not. Those who came there many years ago via migration belong to somebody else's country.

The rule is that if majority of your family members have clear, direct ancestry in some other country (China, Italy, etc.) or another continent then that is what you are. If the majority of them clearly have roots in (mainly) sub-Saharan Africa you are black African. I understand that there are people living in Africa who are clearly descendants of people who happened to be in Africa due to migration, and some just chose to live there. That is different.

I encourage you to do that because you need to know who you are. Don't be satisfied with just Ethiopian if you have reason believe that your roots are diverse. People usually know when they look at their family along with the local people around them and sense that something is a bit different from the norm about the way they act, speak, look, etc. Trace your history. It should be better for you knowing that you don't have to deal with too many surprises like the plight of African American people. At least we focus on the African or black lineages as a majority. That is what makes people proud.

I'm glad you mentioned "does it vary?" in your question because obviously all these comments give you the answer to that, but for starters, just call ethiopians well I don't know--ETHIOPIANS!? that is the smart thing to do.I am a 12 year old girl almost 13 on dec. 30 and people call me mixed or indian one time someone called me yellow but i don't care I think it's interesting when people guess my ethnicity. and if they ever guess black, that's fine with me but I will always tell them the true answer... I am Ethiopian...

Keep your beliefs to yourself and do not respond to anyone, if they come back to you and try to insult you. Okay

Spending a year attending Fulani church was God's will for me. I was very young when an Igbo friend of mine in Atlanta invited me, and the pastor was a Fulani man who closely resembled my father. I didn't do anything or tell them, but the Nigerian people referred to me as the Fulani girl from the first day they met me. It didn't take long for the church to refer to me as the pastor's daughter, and I realized that I had no choice but to accept it and allow the people to see me as they did. Later, I discovered Fulani ancestry in Mississippi back to Ibrahim. I also have other West and East African ancestry.
