Casava contains cyanide. If it's eaten raw, there is a possibility of death from cyanide poisoning. Also, it's only a starch, no known protien ingredients. In other words, it requires other food suppliments such as meat, dairy products, fruits and leaves for a balanced diet. It's also weak in resisting long-term drought.
For alternative, I would suggest Ethiopia adopt eating 'Enset', a native plant to Ethiopia as far north as Begemder in the wild(I have seen it with my own eyes) and as south as Gedeon near kenyan and Ethiopian border. Enset is eaten in all of SNNPR and Oromo bordering with SNNPR, by about 20-25 million Ethiopians. Enset contains no poisonous elements like Casava. It's a starch food like casava without the poisonous cyanide of casava. Like casava, it also requires other food suppliments to get balanced diet. Starch being their only commonality, enset is far supperior and beneficial to Ethiopians.

IT is a highly drought resistant plants. It can survive a continous drought years of 3-4 years. It also produces ropes that can be used for house construction, rigging and tying loads on horse, donkeys or on trucks. It also has a large canopy of leaves that protect soil erosion by flood or wind.

I think Amare Aregawi is a Nigerian from the south, Yoruba or Igbo. Northern Nigeria doesn't Casava. They eat rice.

Kocho production from enset can be mechanized, dried and kocho flour can be produced. As a rsult it can be stored in house and commercial warehouses.
At the moment, it's traditionally produced, by hand, and kept wet under ground. As all dead living tissues kept wet, it undergoes a chemical reaction. It ferments while breaking down producing some form of weak alcohol. the alcohol gives of odor, mildly unpleasant.

With mechanzied production or without, drying the kocho and milling it to produce flour will eliminate the fermentation and the subsequent alcohol production of kocho.
