I am a white guy who is currently married to a beautiful ethiopian woman. We have been married over 4 1/2 years and have a young beautiful boy together. We have another on the way. Now I am currently living in Ethiopia and have been for over 2 1/2 years. I have yet to run into anyone white or black who give me or my wife a hard time. I believe it is the community that you live in gives the perception of whether it is good or bad. If you let your community run your life and pick your mate, I feel very sorry for you. I love my wife and son very very much and not concerned with what others say. Now saying your kid will have a hard time can be true but that can be corrected by you the parent at the first offset by getting the racists punished accordingly. I am not concerned as those who hate because of race or religion are losers in life. I am a christian and as you know if you live here in Ethiopia that the muslim community is very large also. We live mostly in relative peace. Occasional flareups by a few as with all things, but generally very peaceful. I have both christian and muslims visit my home often and we don't badger each other about religion or race. I think that the interracial problems are more within the U.S. and the west but not really within the continent of Africa, but as I have not lived in the rest of Africa I can't say I am totally correct in this matter.

We understand the sentiments of your story, and on topix it appears to be a working relationship. However, how could your mulatto children be accepted when tribes are throwing rocks at each other over there?

I know you will have tension in the Western World, and let's be real. It wouldn't be a cake walk over there, either.

I don't think people would start confusion over a mixed relationship.. but it would be more acceptable to see two African-looking people married. At least that was my experience when I left the U.S. to study some years ago.

Venezuelans did not like whites.. especially American whites. It's not right, but it's the truth. Not good but true.

For the first time in my life, I could shop and shop.. without being overly 'noticed'. Whenever gringos (freckled, blond, red hair, blue eyes..) walked into stores they got followed around.. and there were police guarding the malls with machine guns. No joke.

People can say whatever they want, but my skin protects me whenever I leave the country. I have never had a problem anywhere. The only thing was LEAVING the country.. I had to prove I was American. But when I started talking with my BLACK self.. they asked NO MORE QUESTIONS.. lol.

You leave me laughing as I have lived here twice, the first time for more than a year and now which is over 2 1/2 years and have yet to see "the tribes throwing rocks at each other" as you put it. Now their is tension here mostly associated with political views tied in with the different ethnic groups, some feeling they are not represented by the current government which is in my opinion true. Second tension is a little bit by Christians and Muslims but is very small and the government keeps a pretty good handle on that. I am not sure when you last came here, but maybe you should as you seem to be out of touch. Also I have not been subject to one time of discrimination because of my interracial marriage nor has my son or wife. Now don't perceive me as naive as I am not. I have been all over the world during my 21 years plus service in the Marine Corps and I know how it is. Now with respect to the people in Venezuela, the hatred is with America in general and not specifically with white people. That is due to the information and in most cases because of the current governments view on America. So you can hide for awhile with the color of your skin, but that is not the cause of the hate people have for the different races. Any who hates has been misguided somewhere in life that people are bad or substandard in someway because of their race or religion or in the cases here their ethnic group. Now I will be going back to my hometown which in its history has only had 1 or 2 black families living their at some point and time. I have been welcomed with an open hand for me and my family. I am sure their are a few ignorant people their with their biases and again comes with their upbringing in my opinion. I am protected with the way I was raised and how I treat others, regardless of skin color and have never had an issue in all of my travels. Now about "gringos" being followed around, its just a stereotype that these gringos are more wealthy and that happens all over the world even in America. Doesn't concern me in the least, have more important things in life than money and personal belongings. Have a nice day.

Why would you follow a wealthy person around with a machine gun? Does that make sense? That is how some of my classmates were treated, but not me and a few others. Check yourself.

I went there, and I know how much they hate white American people. Even before we left my instructor told three of us personally-- me, a Filipino girl, and a very very tan girl that we were going to fit in very easily as opposed to being a pale or red head, etc.

Venezuela is an oil nation, and the endearment is not too much better than the love expressed for American soldiers in the Middle East. The only difference is that Venzuelan people are of West African descent among other things.

Maybe in some people's communities they focus on prostitution or need some money, but other people are traveling for leisure purposes and sometimes to study or do both. We had fun between classes, and my roomie and I had time to stay with our friends over there. We met a few government people, too because one of my classmates was an ambassador's daughter. Real cool.

The amazing thing is that I remember seeing black, ebony faces on the paintings inside of the capitol building. That was very nice. It wasn't a perfect place like anywhere else, but I know you are not being truthful about the acceptance thing.. or maybe it's a going thing in some modern Ethiopian communities-- interracial dating is a big hope and dream for those guys for whatever reason. Ugh.

I think you have led a pampered life and somewhat racist. When is the last time you came to Ethiopia? Maybe it is modern or maybe people just woke up and realized people are people regardless of their skin color. I know plenty of not just girls but guys that are married to whites or vice versa. You need to stay in that little biased, racist, pampered place your at. I am sure that I have traveled and seen more countries and experienced more cultures that you can only educate yourself on by looking it up on the internet. Like I say you are far out of the way of the acceptance thing. I don't think Barack Obama would have never gotten elected if that wasn't the case. I was previously married to a filipino and believe my children from that marriage never saw bias because their mother was brown and I was white. Need to get out more often into the real world. PS check out the interracial groups on myspace and other websites and tell them the same things about acceptance of their mulatto children and see what kind of response you get.

I'm Ethiopian and currently dating Caucasian. It might seem rare for most of people but these days Ethiopian girls tend to date whites rather than Blacks, Chinese or else. Even in ET. Despite cultural differences, by default we incline to those who take care of us sincerely and with respect. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any from my black brothers!

How you chose to love and vice versa is up to you as long as yall are happy. That being said, lets not ignore the entrenched racism that unfortunately your children will be subjected to. There's a reason that African-Americans tend to consider mixed-african children black...whites will not accept them as white. Historically white governments have made it policy to "classify" any children with a black parent. Mulatto children were divided into "Half-breeds", "Quadroon", "Octoroon", etc. Much of this was based on whites fear of miscegenation and perhaps even losing "pure-bred whites". I'm not a Caucasian anthropologist but I tell you well that most whites, if not TAUGHT explicitly by their parents, chose other white or light mates because they don't want a dark, non-white baby.

FYI I see nothing wrong with interracial relationships and I nor any of my ancestors created any of these racist institutions or beliefs which I describe. My only point is your children will face these challenges because they de facto blacks by most definitions.

It is not only in this country, if fact half breeds are referred as "KILLISE" and as I was growing up, there was on half breed Armenian, used to call him as such, since nobody care to know his real name. Believe, to be in such a situation is so sad that parents do not think before they committee to each other, their obsession being their physical desire and fulfillment rather than the consequence of their action.

The world is a cruel place for everybody, but then is much crueler for such mix, especially in the US, despite the fact they are loudly professing as a true christian, hence a wolf with sheep clothing

Are saying that he is your sugar daddy and admitting that you are a ho. Well, rather than using your brain by finishing your education in some profession, confess you did that you are using your body. Anyway, you know, have some solace for it is that it is the oldest profession. Mary Magdalene" of the bible after all, was one

I would not say it's worse in the US. It's probably better than most places one both on a social and professional level. There are no "tribes" in the US. The kid would be black. I'm only saying that the kid would get basically the same discrimination that darker blacks get in the US (financing denials, employment discrimination, police profiling, etc). As far as cruelty from his own black people. It'd be the same old stuff. "You're yellow" or "Oreo", but most of this stuff comes from kids. Every AA family is full of dark and light skinned people to the point where it's almost impossible to tell who is a true mulatto, who had light-skinned parents, or who just inherited a recessive gene. AA are accepting of all people of Afrikan descent; this includes those mixed with indian, native american, arab, asian, and white. That's how we roll.

Yes, you are so right. The fact is that the very few might be able to pass as white, like that of the past for the obvious reason that was happening at that time, you will also find some of them to pass as white too at this period of the time. However, by in large, as long as there is that tell of the sign (drop of blood), there is no escaping the very fact that he/she are considered black and that is their fact of life, despite the fact that their parents might sugar coat it and tell the different.

I do not really know, what this guy married to a Ethiopian is telling his children as far as their identification grouping goes, since there are four grouping of race here, which are black, white, Latins, and Asians. They like it or not their child will fall in the black category. The guy was talking about him growing up in a predominately white society. Being in Minnesota, I have stayed for a while in 99.9999 percent of white society, I always see and observe that unspoken stare, the shift of the body when they see me, faking to be nice. You know what I mean. The fact is that that is where is he is taking his children to,

Yes, kids are cruel and mean and I guess that is part of growing up, yet the damage is done. The fact that no matter what the parents try to do, they cannot shelter their kids nor that they can isolate them the world.

In what regard? Also do you mean ethiopians in general, or is it specifically in regards to those that were born and raised in ethiopia? FWIW i've found that the biggest cultural differences between ethiopian people are between those raise her and those raised there. The cultural environment you come up in has a pretty big effect on who you are.

There is a difference between habesha raised in the U.S. and habesha from back home. I feel that habeshas here have less self-confidence than habeshas back home. Habeshas here are too obsessed with assimilation.
